Howard Frisk Photography Howard Frisk is a Seattle area freelance photographer and a native of the Great Pacific Northwest.

My photographic style can be summarized in four words: colorful, detailed, natural and realistic

I strive to bring out the aesthetic qualities of all my subjects, whether a sculpture, a sunset, a product, or a person. My task as a photographer is to find the natural beauty that exists within my subjects, and transform that into images full of meaning. My photographs are available as prints on canvas, framed or unframed, digital downloads, and each year in our calendar.

Extensively researched, this book unveils the rich history of the Gem State through a visual journey with historical black-and-white archival images followed by present-day full-color photographs of the same places.

Each photograph in Abandoned Idaho has a story behind it, and it is through these thought-provoking stories and first-hand accounts that one can find a human connection to the people that once lived, worked, played, and in some cases, died, at the places revealed in this book. Within these pages, an adventure awaits, for many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines explored in Abandoned Idaho are unknown even to Idaho’s life-long residents.

The author and contributing photographers have captured the haunting beauty of decay, transporting readers to the bygone era of bustling pioneer towns, mining camps, railroads, and one-room schoolhouses that are now little more than silent echoes of the past. Through the comparison of historical and present-day photographs, the dramatic time-wrought transformations can be truly appreciated. The author offers a perfect blend of engaging storytelling and insightful historical details.

My debut novel Peg Leg Annie is now available as an eBook! If you have Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited, you can read it for free. Here is the most recent review.

“Peg Leg Annie is a remarkable first writing of a novel. Not only is it well written, the emotional parts are extremely well done. The character Annie was a contemporary of my grandmother and I remember stories that were extremely tough and difficult for people living in that era. Howard brings about in his writing the enormous difficulties for a woman living alone in those early days. He very creatively fills in the empty spaces that are left of what is known of Peg Leg Annie and her friend Em and other characters throughout the book. This is the best novel I have read in quite some time.
Foot note. I am very curious of how many rewrites he did.”

Annie McIntyre comes west with the promise of a better life, only to discover how quickly a dream can curdle into a nightmare. She marries to escape one cage and finds herself locked inside another—beaten, controlled, and ultimately separated from the children she loves most. When tragedy str...

Here is a review of Peg Leg Annie that was posted on Amazon today:
“I had to keep my tissue box close as I read this biographical account of Anna Morrow, one of the many unsung true-life heroines of American history. With the keen observation skill his photographer's eye has perfected in him, author Howard Frisk has also captured the joys and tragedies, the triumphs and disasters of Anna's life with amazing tenderness and insight. It's a can't-put-it-down novel that opens the reader to the soul of a woman at the mercy of the sometimes tender, sometimes cruel Western frontier that could make a man rich but eat a woman alive.. This inaugural work by a new author is absolutely not to be missed.”

My novel, Peg Leg Annie, has just been published! Thanks to my Editor, proofreaders, and ARC Readers that helped make this possible. Here is the description from the back cover:

In the gold mining camps of 19th-century Idaho, Annie McIntyre learns how quickly a dream can twist into a nightmare. She marries to escape one cage, only to find herself trapped in another—beaten and separated from the children she loves.

When a tragedy steals her closest friend and leaves her with a life-changing injury, Annie reemerges as “Peg Leg Annie,” fighting to survive in the brutal world of boarding houses, brothels, and saloons. Forced into the roles the frontier allows—dance hall girl, madam, bootlegger—she builds an unlikely sisterhood with the women who stand beside her when no one else will.

But Annie wants more than survival. She wants her freedom, her dignity, and the chance to reclaim the life that was taken from her. With violence, betrayal, and the law stacked against her, she must decide how far she’s willing to go—and what she’s willing to risk—to seize a future on her own terms.

I’m excited to share some big news—I’ve just finished writing my first novel!

Many of you know my previous books focus on ghost towns and abandoned places in Washington and Idaho, all non-fiction. While researching Idaho’s history, I came across a legendary figure from the gold mining towns whose life fascinated me. I mentioned her briefly in one of my books, and a friend said, “This deserves a novel.” I took that advice—and here we are.

The result is a historical fiction novel rooted in real people and documented events, with imagined dialogue that brings the past to life. The book is scheduled for publication next month and will be available on Amazon.

I’m currently looking for ARC readers (Advance Reading Copy). ARC readers receive a free PDF copy of the book before publication and, if they choose, can be among the first to leave a review on Amazon once it’s released.

If you enjoy historical fiction, western history, or stories set in rugged gold mining towns—and would like to be part of this early group—please message me your email address.

This is the Dalby Water Wheel, located near the tiny town of Union, Washington. I first heard about it several years ago, and I finally made the trip out there to see it. In 1917, Edwin and Ethel Dalby purchased an eight-acre parcel of land which had a stream with enough water volume to turn a wheel of this size. It was one of the first hydroelectric power generating facilities on Hood Canal.
In 1922, Edwin Dalby, with the assistance of his father, William Dalby, built a wooden cultivator wheel. The wheel itself was originally part of a cable car system in Seattle before being brought to the Dalby’s property. Once installed, the wheel generated enough electricity to power their home and several cabins until the 1940’s.
