“Boss Mare” — This fall, Angie reached out with something that had been on her heart for a while: to finally have a professional photo session with her horse, Remi, surrounded by the peace of her 'BetterHalf Homestead'. It was something she had always wanted to do with both of her horses, Stewie & Remi. Sadly, she lost her horse Stewie before her session was booked and she told herself, “It’s now or never for Remi and I.” Remi, whose name means Remedy in French, and couldn’t be more fitting for her.
I am sharing a few of her favorite images from her custom designed leather album, as she asked me to share her story.
Angie titled it “Boss Mare.” In her own words, “The title is something close to my heart. Boss Mare is actually a real meaning in the equine world. In short, she is an older, wiser mare that is the herd leader, guiding for food, water, shelter, safety, and overall well-being of her herd. Such as my role in my family, whether it be fin, feathered, hoofed, paw, or human. It is a kind label full of love and nurturing.”
Inside her album, the opening page holds her heartfelt dedication, written over a background of Remi’s hoof print in the dirt beside a heart-shaped stone that I found on the ground walking back to the barn.
“Thank you, Dad and Grandpa,
For passing down the gift of a love for horses.
A very special dedication of gratitude goes to all the horses, those from my younger years, those with me now, and those yet to come.
Thank you for being my teachers and nurturers, and for guiding me in the Tao of Equis.
May there always be a hoof print beside my step.”
These sessions go far beyond photographs. They capture the bond, honor the animals who shape our lives, and create something tangible that tells a story to be felt long after the moments have passed.
Thank you, Angie, for letting me be part of such a meaningful chapter of your story with Remi. đź’›
On this Small Business Saturday, I feel grateful to do work that I not only love, but matters in quiet, profound ways. Giving us something to hold on to.
