Back to my roots

Years ago, my mom bought me a Canon Rebel T5 just so I could take better photos of cars.

Today, that's still where my photographic passions are. Thrilled with how this shoot came out.

*Ahem*

Is this thing on?

Welcome to the JMarch Media page that never gets used. I'm dusting off the cob webs tonight for an exciting announcement and drop.

For the first time, I am now able to print my own work. It's something that I've heard the "YouTube Photographers" clamor on and on about for years. Well, let me tell you, it's as awesome of an experience as they have always made it out to be.

To celebrate this small landmark, and my upcoming birthday, I am dropping 10 Limited Prints. Each print will be 13x19"

There will be 2 photos available with 5 prints each. They will be numbered # of 5. These are 2 of my personal favorites and also 2 of the most popular images on my social media accounts.

The first image I call "Pittsburgh Blues"

The second I call, "Flat Falls" (There's a story to that name)

Each print will be signed, dated, and numbered on the back.

I will be selling these for just $25/each

As a photographer, being able to print my photos and offer them for sale is really a dream come true.

I will be sharing this post on my personal Facebook account, and I may put these up on Facebook Marketplace as well.

Thanks for reading this far!

So, since photography doesn't seem to pay the bills for a family of 4 just yet, I of course have a job outside of the camera. Actually, I work at a car dealership. Well, recently a manager discovered that I kind of know what I'm doing with a camera pointed at a car, so they decided to have me start taking the used car phots for our website. I enjoy it, naturally. Any chance to put my gear to use is a pleasure. But yet, the style of photography our website demands lacks any sort of creativity.

So, for fun, I thought I would share the same image twice.

The second image is the image I'd like to use. It's a style I like, and while it may not be for everyone, it's exactly the way I'd always have it. I poured my creativity into it.

The first image however, is the image the ends up on our website.

Doing work like this has really taught me to appreciate the ability to express myself through my work, but it's also taken a bit of the magic out of photography for me. So, I don't shoot or post as much as I used to, but my income from photography is higher than ever. Life, I suppose, is complicated.

I know... I neglect my social media accounts associated with my photography. Maybe people would take my work more seriously if I didn't, but it's hard to balance work and life with your passions, even the passions that make you money.

I thought I'd share a photo that presented a pretty big challenge to my editing skills, and my gear. There was a lot of complex lighting and a huge range of shadows and highlights in this image. I had to be careful not to allow the fog to get blown out, but also try to retain some detail in the car. In digital RAW files, it is much easier to recover shadows than it is recover highlights. What's the difference? Shadows are the dark parts, highlights are the bright parts. So, in order to save the detail in my highlights, I had to completely underexpose the car and bring it back in post. On a car that's completely blacked out, that issue is amplified. So, with a lot of filters, local adjustments, and range masks, I was able to get this final product. Thankfully, my camera has enough dynamic range for me to pull this off. I'll share the original image in the comments.

What kind of content would people like to or expect to see on this page? I usually reserve family photos for my personal account, but would those be good here? Should I focus on cars? Landscapes?

Sigma Art 105mm f/1.4 is portrait monster. Pair it with Eye AF, and wow! A good subject never hurts. I have been really working to nail down edits on human subjects. Getting the look you want and retaining skin tones can be challenging. Cars and landscapes are definitely easier, but if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.

I looked out the window at 6:30 this morning and saw something I've been itching to shoot in for a LONG time. Fog. Heavy fog. Perfect fog for car photography. Luckily, I had just put these gold summer wheels on my trusty old VW.

The problem is, I got so excited about hurrying to get ready, leave a few minutes early, put the lens I wanted on my camera, and actually remembering to bring my camera that I completely forgot my phone. HAHAHA. But hey, I got my fog photo. Ran back at lunch to get my phone and do a quick edit while my food was cooking. Not bad for a shot I scrambled to get on my way to the office.

I'm in a love/hate relationship with the beautiful state of West Virginia. I can get stunning shots like this, but on the way here, I got a flat tire from a pothole on the interstate of all places. Worth it? Maybe

Here's a preview of what I'm working on. Stay tuned for one of my favorite photoshoots to date. This was my first legit shoot of 2021 (I know, it's already March), so I'm taking a pretty deep dive into the edits.
