Yesterday was a beautiful day for storm chasing in southern Arizona. My intuition took me to a perfect location with a perfect composition at the most beautiful time of day just slightly after sunset, the light, the clouds, and the set up was absolutely incredible. Right where I was planning to take some photos with another storm photographer. So I got there and greeted him and started chitchatting a little bit right when I was feeling all of the energy and everything peeking! And right then one of the most beautiful lightning bolts I’ve ever seen came down in the exact spot I was planning to set up my camera. I missed the shot of the year, or even maybe even one of the best ever because of formalities 🤣🤣 and then the rest of the night went on to not produce any good lightning photographs, it was like it wasn’t meant to be yesterday. The lightning gods didn’t want me to get a great photo.
I did get this moody photograph of an intense storm north of Tucson, a 20 second exposure, which was lit up by at least six different very bright lightning flashes.

Today was an excessive heat warning here in Tucson! And it felt so intensely hot, I could just sense this buildup of pressure that needed to release! And thankfully it did! Some beautiful clouds and microbursts came rolling from the north to south over the Catalina mountains and down towards Tucson.
And what a show the storms put on! I guess I can handle some hot days for shows like these! If you look closely, there’s a lightning bolt in the first photo 😁 not exactly the lightning and rainbow shot I’ve been chasing, but it sure is a beautiful scene.

Since everyone is really loving the Lightning photos right now. Here’s another one of my favorite lightning photos I’ve taken, with the iconic shape of Picacho peak in the background.
This photo was taken off of the hood of my vehicle propped up on a drywall sponge, cause I did not have a tripod with me.

Going back to some of my photography from this last trip.
One of the things I like about Yellowstone is you never know what kind of wildlife interaction you’re gonna have. Maybe you’re hoping for a bear, wolves or a bison. And then an unexpected magical moment at golden hour, two majestic massive elk with big racks come strutting by with all their regal confidence. And in that moment, you just stop in your tracks and feel incredibly grateful to be witnessing this special moment in time with these incredible creatures.

Sometimes a few little water drops mess up your perfect lightning photos! There’s probably a hundred little ways that I could do better, tips and tricks to ensure overall success on a consistent basis. But I like to just go with the flow and make do with what I have most of the time, such is the life
Some amazing lightning coming over the Catalina mountains on August 7, 2026.

Yesterday was my first storm chase this year. It was fun and exhilarating to be out there, and even though I didn’t quite capture a photo that I was hoping for, the experience still made all my senses come alive.
I almost caught an incredibly epic bolt, but it landed just slightly out of my frame. The last image in this set.
Oh well, every time you go out, it’s a learning experience so that next time you can do it just a little bit better.
