My wife and I went to a marriage dinner at our church for Valentine’s Day. I left my larger cameras behind, because I didn’t want the night to feel like work. I’m working on being present where my feet are.

I’ve covering a handful of St. John’s Jesuit basketball games this season, and I was able to make it to the CHSL championship game. Nick was working at Five Guys when I stopped in to pick up food for my family. I asked if I could make his portrait, and he agreed. Rejection

It was almost 7:30 p.m. and I still didn’t have a photo for the day. The first person I asked said no, which was hard, but that’s also the point of this project. Nothing bad happened. No one laughed. No one took away my birthday.

A little later, while ordering dinner at Chipotle (easily my favorite fast food restaurant) I asked the person making my food. She agreed.

Andre, though I call him Coach Dre, teaches the 6 a.m. workout class I go to. He doesn’t let me get away with much. If the weight looks too easy, he’s more than happy to add on or find another way to push me. In the moment it feels like he’s just being tough on me, but that’s exactly why I keep showing up.

A good friend of mine recently graduated from physician assistant school and invited me to his graduation party at the Toledo Spirits Company. I wasn’t sure I would make it back to town that night, but I did, and I brought my camera to document the evening for him.

Josh Kirk was performing at the party. As the night unfolded, it felt like one of those moments you don’t plan for but are glad you didn’t miss. That’s when I knew it would become the next installment of 28 Portraits, and why I chose an environmental portrait—to show him doing what he does best.

Molly was the dental hygienist at my kids’ appointment today. While we waited for the dentist, I decided she would be the next person I photographed. When I asked to make a portrait, she wasn’t sure at first, but after seeing the rest of the project, she said yes.
