📸 WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS? 🤎
One of the questions I get ALL the time… so here are a few of my favorite tips for choosing outfits that photograph beautifully and will still look good years from now.
And first things first:
START WITH MOM. 😂
Because let’s be honest… Mom is probably going to be the one choosing the final portrait for the wall, and if Mom doesn't love it, nobody loves it. So find something YOU feel beautiful and comfortable in, and build everyone else’s outfits around that.
🤎 LIGHTER COLORS = TIMELESS
I highly recommend whites, creams and lighter neutral tones. Black can photograph beautifully, but it tends to feel visually heavier. Creams, whites and soft neutrals have a lighter, more timeless feel and let your family — not your clothing — be the focus.
Some of my favorite colors for family sessions:
🤍 Cream
🤎 Beige
🤎 Taupe
🌿 Sage
🫒 Olive
🤎 Soft browns
🩵 Dusty blue
🤍 Soft white
Think soft + earthy + natural. You really can't go wrong.
✨ COORDINATE — DON'T MATCH
Everyone does NOT need to wear the same color shirt. In fact, please don't put everyone in white shirts and khakis. 😂
Instead, choose colors that go together and mix them throughout the family.
Think:
Cream + taupe + sage + soft brown
White + denim + olive + beige
Dusty blue + cream + tan + brown
👗 MOM IN A DRESS? YES.
I LOVE a flowy dress or pretty blouse for family sessions.
Dresses photograph so beautifully — they're feminine, flattering and effortless, and the movement adds something extra to your photos. A flowy dress also gives you something to move in, which can make those candid, natural images even better.
🧺 LAYERS + TEXTURE = YES
Layers add depth and make an outfit feel more interesting without being overdone.
Think:
• Flannel over a simple shirt
• Cardigan over a dress
• Denim jacket
• Knit sweater
• Linen
• Soft textured fabrics
✨ A FEW THINGS I WOULD SKIP
❌ Large logos or words
❌ Super stiff clothing
❌ Anything extremely tight or uncomfortable
❌ Everyone wearing the exact same color
❌ Too many bold patterns competing with each other
If you want to use a pattern, one bolder print per family is usually plenty. Let everyone else coordinate around it with simple solids and subtle textures.
Most importantly, wear something that feels like YOU.
I want your photos to look like your family — just on one of those really good days. 😉🤎
Save this for your next shopping trip, send it to your husband when he asks what he's supposed to wear 😂, and when in doubt…

What a great kid!

I LOVE seeing seniors who are involved in a little bit of everything. Alex is a talented baseball player hoping to pitch in college, plays basketball AND is the drum major for CCA's band. How cool is that?!

And can we talk about the suit? 👏

I think this may officially be my new favorite look for the guys — a classic suit and white shirt gives us SO many options and looks amazing for everything from a traditional portrait to a more polished headshot.

I had the best time with Alex and can't wait to see where the future takes him!

Hot. Humid. And almost rained out. That pretty much sums up August senior sessions this year!

Kayden and his mom made this hot, humid evening so much fun, and when the rain threatened to cancel us, we decided to keep going. I am SO glad we did!

This Williamsburg senior is such an easy guy to be around, and we got some great shots showcasing his love of soccer.

He plans to major in software, and I can't wait to see where this next chapter takes him!

Miss Avery is one of those people who is pretty much ALWAYS smiling. She is cheerful, fun, and just a joy to be around. But she also has a killer serious face. I’m honestly not sure which look I love more!

This Solon senior is a volleyball STUD and plans to major in sports marketing. We incorporated rustic locations, wildflowers, and water into her session, and the whole thing came together perfectly.

Avery, you absolutely rocked it!

Declan traveled FOUR HOURS for his senior session, so we were definitely going to make the most of it! We covered a LOT of ground during this session, because when it comes to photographing boys, I try to move fast. 😂

You just never know when you're going to lose them. It might be 10 minutes… it might be two hours.

Declan is a multi-sport athlete and hopes to go into aviation. Congratulations! I know you are going to do great things!

The weather was terrible ALL day long before Claire's session, and I was about ready to call it and reschedule. But Claire lives in Minnesota, so we decided to just go for it! Thank heavens we did!!

It was humid, but that sunset decided put on one EPIC show for us! Plus we had lots of laughs. So glad we took a chance and it all worked out!

I’m not sure I’ve ever met a happier little dude! 🥹

Grady just goes with the flow, laughing and giggling his way through everything. And with THREE busy older brothers, I’m pretty sure he has already mastered the art of just rolling with it.

I have a feeling this little guy is going to be the chillest guy around.

Thank you for letting me be part of Grady’s first year! Watching these little ones grow is one of my favorite parts of what I do.
