Dana Carvey spent most of his career as someone else and Ron caught the in-between.

The Pasadena Civic in September 1989, the night before the Emmys went live. Church Lady had been on the air three years. Wayne’s World had debuted as an SNL sketch that February.

The Waldorf, May 1992. Carvey standing next to Mike Myers three months after Wayne’s World made $183 million worldwide on a $20 million budget. The Las Vegas Convention Center, two months later, working the home video release at the Video Software Dealers convention.

The Kids’ Choice Awards press room in Santa Monica, April 2002. Master of Disguise was four months away.

Carvey was an impressionist before he was a star, yet Ron photographed him across the years he was both.

Dana Carvey turns 71 today.

Pebble Beach. January 1970. The Bing Crosby Pro-Am.

Not a movie set, but a golf tournament on the California coast that Clint Eastwood played regularly.

Ron showed up anyway. That was always his answer to the question of where to be. Everywhere. Always. With the camera ready.

Happy birthday, Clint Eastwood.

Ron Galella served as a United States Air Force photographer during the Korean conflict. This photograph was taken at Pinecastle Air Force Base in Orlando on March 1, 1955.

He came home. A lot of people didn’t.

Today is about the men and women who gave everything so the rest of us could keep living the lives we take for granted most days of the year.

Ron knew what it meant to serve. He never forgot it.

On Memorial Day, we honor all of them.

Nicky Hilton was a year old the first time Ron Galella photographed her. His photos of her still run everywhere, often with no context. In this episode, Nicky finally gives them some.

She walks through twenty years of Ron’s photographs of her, her sister Paris, and her mother Kathy from charity galas at the Waldorf to runway nights at the Pierre. Along the way, she revisits what may be the closest thing she and Paris left behind to a self-portrait in Ron’s archive. She names everything she’s wearing. Ron photographed her throughout it all.

Ron photographed Jackie Onassis at the Lena Horne opening on June 2, 1981. Nederlander Theater. Mike Nichols at her side.

These are among the last frames Ron ever made of her.

He had been photographing Jackie since the early sixties. Twenty years of her crossing sidewalks and leaving theaters. He kept showing up and so did she.

Jackie died on May 19, 1994. She was 64.

The photographs are still here.

Three years before Beetlejuice, Alec Baldwin showed up to a charity tennis match.

May 4, 1985. He was 27, just past his Knots Landing run, not yet the face anyone outside television would recognize. Ron photographed him anyway.

The Pro-Celebrity Tennis Event to Benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation pulled in working actors looking for press and famous ones who liked the cause. Ron didn’t sort the room by wattage. If you were there, you got a frame.

This one’s worth keeping.

Forty-one years on. The archive is still open.

The archive doesn’t have a folder labeled “mothers.”

What it has is this: Jackie Kennedy watching her son walk across a graduation stage in Andover. Diana Ross performing at the Palace Theater with her children there. Mia Farrow at the Tony Awards supper with her son. Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Todd in London. Sophia Loren at JFK Airport with Carlo Ponti Jr. at her side.

Ron set out to document real life. And real life, it turns out, looks a lot like this.

Happy Mother’s Day from the archive.
