Traveling the West to capture the Western way of life! My travels, in the most recent years, have taking me through California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, South Dakota, Wyoming and several times to Montana! I love the West! And want to preserve what it looks like today for future generations! How often we look back on historical pictures and wonder what life must have been like for t

hose who lived then. Well, a hundred years from now, folks will be doing the same thing; looking at our lives and how we lived, what ranching looked like today. Speaking of looking back in time, I have started a work on collecting the Central Overland Pony Express Stations from Sacramento, California to Salt Lake City, Utah. This journey began from visiting Fort Churchill near Dayton, Nevada. Upon reading the History there and capturing photos of the Fort, my interest grew to find out more, to see and capture more! I have collected thousands of photos of the desolate areas in the desert, that still cradle a piece of Western American history. With those photos, and the Research of the men who dared to brave those areas by guarding the stations, or those running full speed on the back of a mustang... I have decided to put it all together and make a Photography Book. The Book will be Photographs of the Stations and brief short stories about those who lived there or passed through. Also, in addition, the sites they may have seen along the trail!! Stay tuned for the book! Meanwhile please continue to enjoy following me on my current travels and viewing the Photography recordings of the sites I see as I go. Thank YOU for sharing your time, encouragement and thoughts with me, it is greatly appreciated :-)

God Bless you and yours my friends! To HIS name be all the Glory, especially when about my work/life, not my own! Thank you Lord for blessing me to be able to follow my passions you have given me.

Painted Bunting, follow up.
I found the graphite under drawing done with a 2B pencil to be too soft. I have learned it is best to use a pencil like 3H or 4H. A harder lead will not smudge as much.
I think this little guy came out well for my current skill level. 😅😉

A few days ago a male and female graced my backyard while I had company!! It was my first time seeing them, ever!! Just this year I even learned they exist and visit Central Texas. I have been seeing others photos and prayed to see one for myself! Answered prayer!! Only got a rough photo with my phone camera though.

Howdy friends!!
I am doing a bit of experimenting. I love drawing in graphite, but also love Watercolor. This Painted Bunting will be my first go of trying to combine them both.

I am not great at starting simple. 🙃😅

Hoping for the best, but no matter what, it will be an experience!

I apologize I havent been on much. As many of you may know, I bought a home in Central Texas a couple of years ago. It was a total remodel and had zero landscaping. I have been doing what I can, when I can to the house and yards. And have been preoccupied with both and not working on a lot of art and photography.

For anyone who is still following my page, I thank you for being here!!

God Bless!..and a way we go...to paint this little bird on 9x12 Arches Cold Press paper with watercolors.

Flash Back to some past works!
I made these around 1995 (ish?)
The three colorful ones were all the rave back then! ❤️
I was digging through my old leather tool box, looking for some old artwork for patterns, and found these.
Did you ever have one of these wallets? Or maybe you still do prefer them?

Awesome find this past weekend at a local Antique store in McGregor, Texas!
This watercolor artwork is by Howard E Smith.
Titled "Breaking the Wild Stallion"

I not only love to create western artwork, I love to collect others as well. I saw this sitting in the floor in a "half-off" booth...and I went back a couple of times to look at it. I had to buy it!

I am not sure, but the paper looks to be watercolor paper. I may have happened on an original signed piece? Not sure how I would find out?
The photos show a bit of what I found. I only found two smaller versions that had sold in my search.

HOWARD EVERETT SMITH

BIOGRAPHY

(1885-1970)

Howard Everett Smith was a New Englander, born in West Windham, New Hampshire. After attending the Art Students League in New York with classes under George Bridgman, he transferred to the Howard Pyle school in Wilmington, Delaware. He later attended advanced classes with Edmund Tarbell at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts.

He was very soon able to have his work published, making early appearances in Harper’s Weekly and Harper’s Monthly. His illustrations were also published in Scribner’s Magazine and in The Ladies’ Home Journal, as well as in a number of books including The Children’s Longfellow and The Beginning of the American People.

Smith was especially interested in Impressionism, and in 1911 won the Paige Traveling Scholarship from the Museum School for two years’ study and travel in Europe. With income from his illustrations, he extended his study for another year. After his return in 1914, he became an instructor at the Rhode Island School of Design. In addition to landscapes, he also painted a number of portraits and worked with lithography. In his later years, Smith moved to California to become an active participant in the Carmel Art Association, exhibiting and winning many awards.
