The tunnels of the Tehachapi Pass Railroad are some of the most impressive—and least talked about—engineering achievements in California history. When Southern Pacific Railroad pushed its line through the rugged Tehachapi Mountains between 1874 and 1876, engineers faced steep granite cliffs and deep canyons. Instead of going around the mountains, they blasted directly through them.

Using little more than picks, shovels, black powder, and hand drills, approximately 3,000 workers—most of them Chinese immigrants—carved 18 railroad tunnels and built 10 bridges in less than two years. The work was dangerous, with crews hanging from ropes on cliff faces, drilling into solid granite by hand before placing explosives. Rockfalls, blasting accidents, and harsh working conditions made tunnel construction one of the deadliest parts of the project. Historians believe hundreds of workers lost their lives during the construction of the entire Tehachapi Pass Railroad, although exact records were never kept. (ASCE)

The most famous of these is Tunnel 9, located at the bottom of the world-famous Tehachapi Loop. As a train enters Tunnel 9, it begins a complete spiral around the mountain, eventually crossing directly over the tunnel it just passed through. This remarkable design allows trains to gain 77 feet of elevation while maintaining a manageable grade of about 2 percent, making it possible for today’s mile-long freight trains to climb the mountains safely. Although the original railroad included 18 tunnels, route improvements and realignments over the past 150 years have eliminated several of them. Even so, many of the historic tunnels remain in active service today, carrying dozens of Union Pacific and BNSF freight trains every day. THE SHOCKING TRUTH ABOUT THE TEHACHAPI LOOP

The Tehachapi Loop isn’t just one of the world’s greatest railroad engineering feats—it’s a monument built through backbreaking labor, dangerous working conditions, and human sacrifice.

Construction began in 1874 and was completed in 1876 by the Southern Pacific Railroad under Chief Engineer William Hood. The project relied heavily on the labor of approximately 3,000 Chinese immigrant workers, who carved through solid granite using little more than hand tools, black powder explosives, picks, shovels, and horse-drawn carts. But the true human cost has been debated for generations.

No official death records were kept during construction, making an exact number impossible to verify. Modern historians generally reject the old claims that “thousands” died. However, researchers estimate that roughly 100 to 150 workers may have lost their lives during railroad construction in the Sierra Nevada and related Southern Pacific projects, while local Tehachapi history also preserves accounts that more than 300 Chinese laborers were buried near Caliente before many of their remains were later returned to China. you’re following the railroad from Caliente, California toward the Tehachapi Loop, you’re traveling along one of the most famous stretches of railroad in North America.

The railroad reaches Caliente after climbing out of Bakersfield and immediately begins winding through the rugged canyons of the Tehachapi Mountains. Built in the mid-1870s by the Southern Pacific Railroad, this route was an incredible engineering challenge. Thousands of Chinese laborers carved the line through solid granite using little more than picks, shovels, horse-drawn equipment, and black powder. By the time the railroad reached Tehachapi Pass in 1876, crews had constructed 18 tunnels, 10 bridges, and countless rock cuts that still serve trains nearly 150 years later.

As trains leave Caliente, they snake through tight curves, steep grades, and dramatic mountain scenery before reaching the world-famous Tehachapi Loop. There, the railroad makes a complete spiral around a hill, gaining 77 feet of elevation. Long freight trains—often more than three-quarters of a mile long—can actually pass over themselves, with the front of the train crossing a bridge directly above the rear cars. It’s one of the few places in the world where this can regularly be seen, making it a bucket-list destination for railroad enthusiasts and photographers.

Please, keep this a beautiful area by leaving no trace.
