Forgot my tripod but surprisingly did ok handheld! Also made it out of this canyon before a flash flood turned everything brown, muddy and dangerous, but luckily we had 3 nights of paradise. This place was definitely a bucket list trip, unreal experience with some great friends!

Took a weekend trip with to photograph some lesser known giants. The feeling of discovering new compositions is unmatched and both Steven and I agreed this was one of our favorites from the trip. The first photo was shot on my professional camera, while the last one was taken on my iPhone. And the song is one Steven introduced me to. Shooting waterfalls is fun but shooting them with a best buddy makes it x10 better

This one was special—got to shoot an elopement for one of my closest childhood friends on the island of Kauai, one of my favorite places on earth. Even got to bring my anamorphic lens—the same lens they used on Dune: Part Two! So proud of how it all turned out, from the shoot to the edit, from the color grade to the final. And even more stoked for the happy couple! Thanks for trusting me with your special day .r.w208 & .l.williams

As a photographer, the first location I truly obsessed over was Kauai, specifically Kalalau and the Nā Pali. Every time I visit, I feel pulled more and more to this place. We were very grateful to be able to spend two days on Kalalau Beach, as the trail was closed both before and after our permit dates due to inclement weather. Our original attempt 8 years ago left us feeling unfulfilled and reaching that beach was truly a special moment for us.

I’ve called California home more than once in my life and seeing all the destruction from these recent fires has been very hard to watch. If you can, please donate. A quick Google search will yield many different options to help those being displaced during this disaster.

Experiencing such a dramatic fiord during a storm was undeniably beautiful. Something I noticed was the shear strength of nature, not just the powerful water cascading from the high peaks but the smallest of plants growing on the side of the wall, clingy for dear life as they were beaten senseless by the wind and gallons of rainwater. There were no discernible pathways for which the water to follow, no evident waterfall scars. Those had long been filled up and the water just flowed wherever it pushed itself, wherever the wind would reroute it. It was a quite beautiful chaotic dance.

As we followed the pathways of ancient glaciers, it became obvious to me that our journey through Milford Sound is one I’d remember forever. Morning light spilled down the peaks, thousands of feet above us, and the moisture from the previous days storm brought just the right atmospheric magic for a double rainbow.

Before I ever shot landscape photos, I was making videos. Some of my earliest memories are playing with the family video camera, and in the last year, that love has been rekindled. As a result, for 3 weeks, I dragged a huge anamorphic setup around New Zealand, capturing video on my R5. I’m still going through all of it, but wanted to share a few locked-off sequences I’ve been messing with. I’ll put together a full travel edit eventually, but for now I’m learning some new software and catching up where I left off. If I share more videos, do you like this format? Or should I upload them sideways with a “turn your phone” disclaimer?

This year I felt small. A david below a giant. A grain of sand. I felt the weight of it. Pressures and anxieties for what the new day would bring. The uncontrollable felt scary and even malicious at times. And yet, occasionally I noticed my smallness felt light. A kind of relief. Something comforting. Underneath the Aurora, beneath towering peaks, or standing atop of them, I’d look out and think “What a wonderful thing it is to be small.” To have no control, as everyone fights for it. To remember the Earth is a speck of dust and our lives are a small flash of light. A lightning strike in a storm with no promised end or beginning. I guess what I’m trying to say is, this year was challenging, but I feel grateful to exist, grateful for the experiences I’ve had, and the people I experience them with. And I hope next year I continue to feel small. Just maybe a little more of the good kind.

At the furthest south of the Southern Alps lies Mt. Earnslaw. To view its magnificent glacier sitting above these waterfall ridden cliffs, you must hike ~17 miles through steep and unstable terrain. What is usually considered a multi-day hike, Emily and I decided to do as a 15 hour day hike. We began our hike at 2:30AM. Though exhausting, this place is one of the most amazing locations I’ve ever been. As the sun warmed the glacier, more and more waterfalls began to appear over the rock cliffs and I was able to thaw out my feet from standing barefoot in the icy glacial water

According to Māori legend, Titiwai was born of the stars. The small but bright creature inhabited the darkest of caves, reminding those who venture deep within the earth, that the ancestors in the sky still see them in the depths. Guardians of the taonga the caves held, the titiwai can sense if you come with ill intentions and turn off their lights, leaving you alone in the dark. We were lucky enough to explore the glow worm caves in Te Anau as well as this smaller more intimate grotto near Hokitika.
