l'm honored that my image of a gopher tortoise, titled "Keystone," has won the Wildlife category of the Florida Wildlife Federation's 2025 Photo Contest.

These reptiles are considered a keystone species because they dig burrows that provide shelter for roughly 350 other species. Long may they reign over Florida's sandy uplands and beyond.

This stunning image features a gopher tortoise, one of our state’s keystone species, making its way through a sandy upland in Manatee County. Its burrows provide shelter for over 300 other species, highlighting the tortoise’s vital role in Florida’s ecosystems and earning this shot a top spot among hundreds of breathtaking submissions.
