I love Maine’s wildflower season! It may not be quite as good as the Pacific Northwest’s version, which I fervently hope to photograph someday, but it is a close second in my book! I visited a massive field of about a square mile of packed together lupines on Friday with a friend and only used my 600mm lens because I wanted to get one of the Redwing Blackbirds that were landing on the lupines and probably gathering bugs for their babies to eat. They are devilishly hard to capture in flight, and it was even hard to focus on them because my camera seemed to want to focus only on the flowers. But I managed some neat still shots. As Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, our most famous citizen, once said, “Often I think of the beautiful town that is seated by the sea.” I went to Bug Light last night to watch the sun set behind Portland’s skyline and golden hour was the most beautiful part of it. The full Flower Moon, is predicted to be a clouded experience for Sunday evening, so I went down to Nubble Light on Saturday evening to catch it at 98% full, rising beside Nubble Light. We had to wait for it to peep through a bunch of clouds, so it isn’t very big. But it looked quite pretty and I was happy to see it, since I missed it rising last month due to clouds and rain, too!
