Pictures are a catalyst for memories, they give substance to ethereal images of the mind. The art is capturing a subject in such a way, as to tap, not only your memory but the memory of others.

i have recently joined the FB Group "Abandoned East Texas" and was quite surprised at the number of people that love old deserted and abandoned buildings as much as I do. We do not look on these as being "ugly" or "eyesores" rather, we view them as the quintessential reminger of our mortality.

I came across this tragic scene as I returned from a trip to Dallas. I was lucky, I had a camera, my IPhone. There is an old photographer's adage "the best camera is the one you have with you." I have had trouble following this advice for most of my life. It is hard to keep a camera with you all the time, pocket cameras are still buky and impracticle. Keeping one in your car is also impracticle, as batteries go dead and, in my case, I had one stolen from my car although it was out of view. then came cell-phone cameras, at first pretty poor quality, but now with many improvements they are a viable option. My IPhone camera has come in very handy, great quality, large imagesand easy to use. Plus it is with me all the time.

A thought on Black and White photography: Sometimes color gets in the way. For those who care about such things, there have been several studies that tell us, color is linked to the emotions. Color affects the secretion of hormones and stimulates the cerebral cortex where emotions are located and activates a unique recognition of thoughts and memories. Consequently color enables us to perceive forms of objects accurately, recognize objects, and accept them.

I prefer to keep it simple, so, I will call this the “Awwww...isn’t it pretty” response. When a viewer looks at a picture that contains pretty colors, there is the tendency for the brain to say “that’s all I need to know” and move on without looking any further. This is why “sometimes color gets in the way.”

By removing the distraction of color you force the eye to look for something else meaningful. Shape, texture, contrast, becomes more important. The focus of the viewer is now on the subject itself, free from the influences of innate emotional response to color. The viewer can now ask “how does the photograph make me feel” on a different level.

"A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know." - Diane Arbus

This photograph is of a young man pausing as he leaves the darkness below and emerges into the light above. There is a sense of insecurity as he reaches back to check his wallet. All lead-in lines of the photograph point to him making him inconspicuously the center of attention.

Photographer Diane Arbus commented "I never have taken a picture I've intended." Photography to me, is unplanned, a spontaneous reaction to what I see. Chaotic, yes, but a sensitive dependence on what is initially seen. It is not until later, after I have printed the image that I see the picture as for the first time.
