Katherine M. Blanner

Katherine M. Blanner Lifestyle photographer For my eighth birthday, my grandfather gave me a simple film camera. I prefer to capture those instances as they are: organic and pure.

From that moment on, I have loved the beautiful and powerful medium of photography, and the capturing of fleeting moments. I do not use Photoshop, although I own it and am trained in the program; I do use basic edits (cropping, altering the shadows, highlights, contrast, and brightness, changing the image from color to grayscale). To me, it is not about marketing off of a hobby that I have loved s

ince a young age, but capturing the subject naturally, ensuring the beauty of the individual's soul is captured.

I feel like I've entered a new era of my photo biz. I say this for a few reasons.

- I have recently joined a "beginners photography" Facebook group. Yes, I purchased my first DSLR in 2013... which makes me far from a beginner. I mainly joined the group because I thought of how helpful my "sourdough for beginners" group has been, even though I started my sourdough hobby as a pandemic thing that stuck around. People asking for advice and troubleshooting have really helped me look at photography in a new way. For example, I took this image with a telephoto lens because the photography Facebook group I am in had some amazing examples of photos taken with a 70-200mm lens.
- I started offering shorter shoots for a lower price. Yep, I offer mini-session prices all the time, so long as the shoot location is in Arlington Heights. There's no catch, either. Less time, and still all the best edited photos I took. For $150 for 30 min... Always. :)
- I am being intentional about HOW I edit, too. I recently got a few presets and have been using the color grading as a jumping-off point, and hoo boy. Yes. It's awesome. Presets are like... super advanced photo filters.

That's that! I've always been bad at writing conclusions, even though I have a bachelor's in English writing :) Have a nice evening!

Spent a long weekend in Yosemite. This is a photo I took with an old camera using a lens designed for instant cameras. I figured I might as well have fun with the photos, since Ansel Adams got me beat there.

During this wedding Mass, I went to the choir loft to check out the view from up there. And let’s be honest, the choir was singing “O God Beyond All Praising,” which is probably the best song in the universe. I needed it straight in my veins. And on my way up, I saw this staircase. The yellow stained glass and the dark wood… incredible. So I made the bride and groom do some photos in that staircase. Here’s a candid from that.

Just some truly divine black and white photos of the bride waiting for her wedding to start. Hope described this phase as “watching paint dry,” because she was so excited to see her groom and marry him.
Also since these photos are so truly divine what the heck am I supposed to do now when I’ve done this? They are truly so incredible and I’m impressed with even myself

My little sister got married. I wasn’t her photographer (but she did task me with choosing the right photographer, and I did a really good job finding an amazing fit! Shout out to Lena), but I always have a camera on me. So here are some behind the scenes stills of her wedding day. I don’t think I’ve ever taken as nice of photos of a wedding venue as I did last weekend.

Also cowboy hats. For a Texas wedding of course.

Shot my first wedding of 2026 yesterday. It was a teeny tiny wedding at St. Clement’s in Chicago. Honestly? I love that vibe. My husband and I had a tiny wedding and only a photographer for the ceremony, and kept it simple. We could focus on us that day. And that’s just what Hope and Andrew did, too. A happy reminder of my own wedding.
