Another amazing night at this 34th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival!

St. Louis showed up for the screening of “Undercard”, a film about a Miami boxing trainer, (Sykes) fighting for sobriety, taking care of her adopted niece and trying to connect with her estranged son. Although playing a dramatic role is a new genre for Sykes, there were many moments of levity and finding humor in the darkness. The audience cheering and tearing throughout the film.

Following the screening, Wanda Sykes, and director Tamika Miller, took part in conversation about the film and answered audience questions about this inspired, and touching story. Miller said it took over a decade to raise the financing for this movie and that “Undercard” is a story that came from who she is, as a q***r, black woman.

Cinema St. Louis awarded Wanda Sykes the SLIFF Trailblazer Achievement Award. Wanda has been setting standards and breaking barriers for marginalized stories, on and off screen for decades.

Opening night of the 34th annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival!
The Women In Film Award was granted to director .berinstein for her incredible work, and her latest documentary .
This film explores the life, artistry, and activism of designer and humanitarian . We follow the passion and social impact of Kenneth Cole, on the backdrop of the beautiful frontrunner for change, New York City itself. The screening was followed by a an inspiring and candid Q&A with Kenneth and Dori.
I am excited to be a part of the storytelling experience at this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. See who else I run into this week in my stories! More to come!
