It's my favorite game: Which photo do you like best?

I need your help.

I'm preparing for an upcoming art exhibition and need to choose two featured images from this series: one color photograph and one black & white photograph.

A little background on the photographs:

During the Delta wave of the pandemic in Myanmar, we were confined to our home for nine weeks under stay-at-home orders. It was a difficult time marked by a lot of uncertainty and loss.

During those weeks, I found myself looking for small things to be grateful for. I found a measure of peace and sanity in the tiny garden surrounding our home. Within it, I found beauty, hope, and reminders that life continued even in difficult times.

These photographs became a reminder that there was always light, even in the deepest darkness.

A client told me recently she felt like she was “auditioning for professionalism” every time she had her photo taken.

I completely get that.

There’s this impossible standard women in leadership get handed before they ever step in front of a camera. Be polished. Be warm. Be authoritative. Be approachable. Be confident. Be effortless.

All of it, simultaneously, under bright lights, with someone staring at you through a lens. Oh, and do it in heels.

So you perform. And if you look closely at those photos, you can see it — the stress held in the jaw, the shoulders that never quite dropped. You’re not looking powerful. You’re tired of performing.

Instead of rushing you through a thousand poses, I give you the chance to breathe. I’ll lower the camera, slow things down if needed, actually listen to what you have to say. The jaw unclenches. The shoulders drop.

I want you to enjoy the experience because that is seen in the finished photograph.

As I was scrolling through my phone, I found this gallery of one of my favorite sessions. I don’t consider myself a pet photographer, but I do believe in photographing you with your pets. They may only live a few short years, but they can leave a lasting impression on our lives.
