A Great Blue Heron in Autumn Colors - I will try to edit and post more of my encounter with this Great Blue Heron at Dawson Lake last night (10/14/26). It was slowly wading through this shallow part of the lake, and the lighting and colors were just perfect. I wanted to edit this image first, as I love the pose and reflection.

Sea Stacks of Olympic National Park - I was mesmerized by these sea stacks just off the beaches of Olympic National Park. I could photograph them all day and especially loved catching them during the different phases of the light as the gloomy clouds gave way to a spectacular sunset. They looked like something out of a dream or from another planet. They represent the power of Mother Nature, as the ocean waves have spent centuries carving these rocks into what we see today. This set of images is the perfect way to end my photo series of Olympic National Park and concludes my images from our summer trip across the country, ending with a cruise where we visited four National Parks.

Enjoying the Tide Pools at Olympic National Park - I captured this panoramic of one of the beautiful sea stacks on the beaches of Olympic National Park. You could spend hours just exploring the tide pools and rock formations for colorful sea and plant life. It is one of the most fascinating things about this place. The contrast of gray and blue clouds with the lush green plant life makes for some incredible landscapes. Add the ocean and the evening sun, and these beaches glow!

Birds of the Pacific Northwest - The birds of Olympic National Park were plentiful, with many that were new to me, along with some very familiar birds that we have here at home. It didn’t matter—if they gave me a good look in the right setting, I photographed them. It is so much fun seeing new birds in different parts of the country, and I love sharing them with you all.

Hoh Rainforest - This is a series of images from the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park. These were all taken along the Hall of Mosses Trail. Once again, these images don’t do it justice. The size of these trees was truly otherworldly, with species such as sitka spruce and western hemlock towering above us. There was something almost humbling about walking among these ancient trees, some of which have stood here for generations, surrounded by a forest shaped by centuries of rain, growth, decay, and renewal. It felt like stepping into a world that existed long before us and will hopefully continue long after we are gone. It was such a treat to slow down and hike among these giants and experience a small glimpse into the ancient history of this incredible rainforest.

Eagles of Olympic National Park - We were blessed to see several bald eagles during our cross-country drive through several national parks and our cruise to Alaska. Seeing these magnificent birds never gets old, but seeing them along the shores of Olympic National Park felt especially special. It seemed like these beaches were the perfect habitat for eagles, with towering sea stacks to perch on, ancient trees rising from the rainforests, and an abundance of food along the coastline and in the surrounding waters. The second image captures a moment I will never forget. A bald eagle flew directly over me with some sort of waterfowl clutched in its talons. I’ve seen and photographed many eagles carrying fish, and I’ve seen images taken by others of eagles carrying waterfowl, but this was the first time I had ever photographed one myself. Watching that eagle soar overhead with its prize was a powerful reminder that we were walking through a landscape where these incredible birds truly reign. Standing on those beaches, surrounded by sea stacks, ancient forests, crashing waves, and soaring eagles, I felt like we had stepped into the eagle’s domain. There was something wild and majestic about being there, witnessing these magnificent birds living so freely in one of the most beautiful places we visited.

Long Exposure Coastline - I took an image of this same shoreline at sunset, but I also loved this version from earlier that evening. I handheld the camera for a long exposure, allowing the waves to blur as they rolled onto the shore. I love the contrast between the cool blues of the ocean and the warmth of the forested coastline. There was something almost magical about standing there, watching the waves move in and out while the last light of day slowly faded around me.

Waves Crashing - I waited for the right moment to capture the waves crashing against these sea stacks, illuminated by the backlit sunset. Revisiting and editing these images brings back the smells and sounds of the ocean—the feeling of the mist in the air and the incredible beauty of the landscape created by the sea stacks, crashing waves, and fading light. There was something almost magical about standing there, watching the ocean move around these massive formations as the sunset illuminated the mist and transformed the entire scene. It all made for such a memorable experience that will forever be etched into my mind.

Silhouetted Sea Stack - I love this magical light illuminating the sea mist, made more visible by the dark, silhouetted sea stack. I also love how the trees grow on these land formations carved by millions of years of ocean waves. These scenes make for incredibly beautiful landscapes, especially as the sun sets.
