Is that a wormhole?

I’ve been on a tear making space art lately, in part to get ready for art fair season, but mostly from the pent up creativity after a long, uninspiring winter.

I’m also considering making some behind the scenes clips and maybe the origin story of this art form that I don’t think I’ve ever shared on this platform. (My art fair neighbors, on the other hand, have heard it 10,000 times…).

If you’d be interested in this sort of content, let me know in the comments, and of course please like, follow, repost, forward to your besties…

This is wild!

Not quite nebula, not quite planet.
All of these shapes and colors and textures are edible things in a cast iron pan. I’ve been on overdrive experimenting on my back porch late into the night. (So far my neighbors haven’t asked me about the weird lights happening past midnight.)

The results constantly surprise me, which is one reason I keep doing it.

What do you see in this one? Would you hang this on your wall? Let me know in the comments!

Also, if you’re enjoying my explorations like this as much as I am, please forward to friends who you think would like them. Help me beat the algorithm!

As I work my space art, the component parts often evolve over time: ingredients react with others, crystals dissolve and form again, liquids find their level, adjacent cooking oils fuse or fold under or into each other: a strange kind of viscous tectonics. I photograph these evolutionary surprises, and may use those images at any or all stages. The nebula here is one evolution of an earlier piece I shared. The “stars” born here in the nebula’s mouth are remnants of light glinting off the cast iron pan within which I made the nebula.

I’m on the fence about this composition, but I like all the individual elements.

What do you think? Tell me what you like or don’t in the comments below.

Get a look at these colors and textures!

I spent a manic couple of days making the raw materials for some space art. I got a new pan (my canvas), some new cooking ingredients (my paint) and ended up taking 500 photos of cooking ingredients in pans over two nights. Some of those photos will turn into space art like this one.

I don’t know if this one is done as-is or if I’ll make it into a composite piece. What do you think? Does it stand on its own as an abstract art piece or is it a wild nebula that will play host to some planets? What do you see when you look at it?

This was wild to make!

This is the combination of a few space art experiments I’ve done over the last year, playing with new materials, tools, and methods.

My self-imposed rules are: this art is 1) made with edible things and 2) made in kitchen pans. (No, you probably don’t want to eat it when I’m done.)

Part of what I enjoy is exploring and discovering all the play that I can do within those constraints. For example, in this case dry ice and soy sauce were involved. (Insert mad scientist cackling.) I’m always surprised by the textures I get in this exploration.

Stay tuned for more experimentation results!

If you like this kind of stuff, follow along for more. If you think someone you know would like it, please share!

Happy Star Wars day, everyone! 😉Thanks for following along for my space art.

A gas giant surrounded by its moons.

I had been discovering some new materials and tools to mess with, then I found some old photos to build this.

As usual, all these components are made with cooking ingredients, photographed, and then composed in Gimp (a free photoshop alternative) on my computer.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

If you’re new here, please give me a follow to see more art like this. And if you know someone else who would be into this sort of thing, please share with them.

I heard that people making original content on here are going to be more visible. Let’s hope that’s true!

Now back to making some prints for my next art fair in 5 (!) weeks…

Happy World Pinhole Day! Here is my addition to the celebration of simple photography … a humble photo of my street. As an experiment, I added some crumpled foil to the inside of the camera, but it seems to have had no discernible effect.

Not my usual fare, but inspirational for my space art! Last night at dinner in Carlsbad, CA. I caught my first glimpse of a rocket plume over the Pacific Ocean. It was almost supernatural — this comet-like thing moving slowly across the sky in total silence.

If the rocket launch got you to this post, maybe you’d like some of my space art! Have a look around, take your time…
