ONLINE SNEAK PREVIEW:
Ty Johnson is Allegany Magazine’s 2020 “Most Fascinating”
Pro Football Player among 20 people featured in January edition
Who do you find fascinating?
It’s a question we have been asking our readers for 14 years.
This year, for the fourth time, Allegany Magazine has chosen one of the names suggested by you as the area’s “Most Fascinating Person" for 2020.
And this year, that title belongs to professional football player and Fort Hill High School alum, Ty Johnson.
For the first time in the history of choosing someone to be Allegany Magazine’s ‘Most Fascinating Person of the Year’ our staff was in complete agreement as to the choice for 2020.
No one from Allegany County has captured our attention, our time, our conversations, our televisions on game night and indeed – our hearts – in the last 12 months than 2015 Fort Hill High School graduate – Ty Johnson.
Drafted by the Detroit Lions in May 2019, this is Ty Johnson’s second Allegany Magazine cover. His first was in July 2017 when he was a promising pro playing for the University of Maryland.
Ty has literally been shot out of a canon – from his small town upbringing in Cumberland to the bright lights and swirling constant attention that comes with being a rising professional football star. With his boy next door looks, engaging smile, rapport with fans, natural finesse and hair that seems to have its own personality, Ty Johnson is poised to be the "best thing from Detroit since Motown."
Ty Johnson appears on our January 2020 cover in a photograph taken by photo correspondent, Sean McCarty of 4710 Photography and in a design by Allegany Magazine graphics editor Jeremy Warnick. The photo and cover have also been endorsed and approved by the Detroit Lions organization.
“Ty’s story is one of great person who made good decisions and surrounded himself with the right people to accomplish his goals,” said his former head coach at Fort Hill High School and mentor, Todd Appel.
“People ask me now all the time, ‘do you think you’ve made it yet?’ and I’m like ‘nah.’ I still have a long way to go and a lot to do,” Ty says in an included interview with us inside the new issue. "I will feel like I made it when I am sitting on a beach one day with my family. This football stuff is temporary. The NFL stands for Not For Long. But I plan to make the most of it while I’m here.”
The other 19 “most fascinating” people who appear in the January 2020 edition of Allegany Magazine include Mark and Jennifer Ashby, John Balch, Steve Bazarnic, Joe Caporale, Roy Carls, McKenzie Christopher, Derek Crippen, Eugene Frazier, Nicole Halmos, Drew Hankinson (a.k.a. Luke Gallows), Beth Hilliker, Rita Knox, Sean McCagh, Dorian McCartney, J.W. Meyers, Mary Beth Pirilizzo, Melanie Vogel, and Dawn Wolford.
Allegany Magazine is a sister publication to the Cumberland-Times News. It is available by subscription and at more than 50 retail partners throughout Allegany, Bedford, Garrett and Mineral Counties.
