I have had so much fun watching the this month! Not just because I love skiing and the coming together of nations – but because of the setting – my beloved !

It has been almost 10 years since I last visited… but it feels like it was just yesterday. Mountains that envelop you, rising up all around you, like a welcoming embrace. Colors that continuously change, absorbing and reflecting light across the dolomitic peaks. Clouds that paint the sky with patterns, casting dappled shadows on the landscape. The beauty here is palpable. Otherworldly. Magical. And a host of other superlatives that must be experienced to be understood.

Watching has brought these sensations roaring back to life, and left me yearning to return! Soon, I hope… Soon…

Saludados desde Guanajuato, Mexico – Greetings from Guanajuato, Mexico – one of my many homes away from home!
I have such incredible memories of the first time I visited ten years ago… taking in this magical city, tucked into a mountain valley, full of vibrant colors, history, and life… A passion for this place was instantly born in me, a place that continues to inspire. This photo taken during that special first trip here, and remains one of my favorites.
Guanajuato has always reminded me a little of Venice, Italy – particularly of the colorful island of Burano; but a vertical version, with all of the vibrancy and beauty is stuffed into the side of a mountain!
I am beyond thrilled to be back to create more images, to capture and share its vibrant beauty.

I cannot think of Earth Day without thinking about my dad.
Maybe because we celebrate his birthday on the same day.
But also because of how much he loves this celebration.
He has several Earth Day tee shirts (many given to him by me).
We have gone to a few fairs and festivals celebrating the event.
But even more importantly, he loves the beauty of our planet, which he has passed down to me.

We have traveled to far corners of the earth together, with exploration, appreciation, and  photography always at the center.
And we equally celebrate making images right down the street!
I was inspired to become a photographer because of him.
I kept his last name as part of mine when I married as a testament.

So Happy Earthday Birthday pop! Thank you for continuing to inspire me!

Happy “first” day of spring!

Spring is one of my favorite seasons... Days are getting longer and warmer, flowers are starting to bloom, and everything is greening up. It feels hopeful. Like a fresh start. With unlimited opportunity for new growth.

Vernal equinox, or astronomical spring, is today at 8:06pm PT. Most years this falls on March 20 or 21. Why so early this year? Because 2024 is a leap year! In fact, this is the earliest first day of spring in over 100 years, since 1896. What’s more, during every coming leap year from 2028 to 2104, spring will start on March 19 at an earlier and earlier time!

But did you know that spring also began on March 1? This is following meteorological seasons, which are broken into three-month seasons based on annual temperature cycles. Astronomical seasons – equinoxes and solstices – are calculated based on how the Earth moves around the sun.

As a photographer, meteorologic and astronomic events fascinate me. I’m perpetually tracking the hour of sunrise and sunset, the phases of the moon, where they are in the sky, high and low tides, incoming storms and windless lulls, seeking interesting shooting conditions to create compelling images.

So whatever definition you use for when it officially begins, happy spring. Here's to the new beginnings that await us all!

Happy 4th of July!

I was reviewing photos from a recent trip to New York City when I visited the 9/11 Memorial. Surrounding it today, of course, is the new World Trade Center Complex.

This is the top of new One World Trade Center, reflected in the new 4 World Trade Center. When I captured this image, I don’t think I realized how it would impact me when I saw it again – proud, sad, grateful.

We, the United States of America, declared our independence on July 4, 1776. One World Trade, or Freedom Tower, reaches 1,776 feet including its spire – a deliberate reference to the year when the Declaration of Independence was approved and signed.

Happy Birthday America!

Hey! It’s National Pollinator Week! Who knew that in 2006 our U.S. Senate unanimously approved the designation of this week!? Well, now you do. And today the event crosses national borders into Canada, Mexico, and even some countries in Europe.

Butterflies, moths, bees (of course!), flies, beetles, wasps, Birds, bats, and other small mammals are all pollinators – and I have a total thing for butterflies. I can sit for hours on end watching them dip and dive and dance and drink and play and court each other.

A few years ago I was in a meadow near Lake Tahoe, and this pale swallowtail butterfly danced for me and my camera for over an hour, in between sips of meadow penstemon nectar. What a treat!

I grew up two miles from the Pacific Ocean, just a quick bike ride down to the beach. As a kid, I spent most summer days lying on a towel in the sand, swimming until my teeth were chattering, my lips blue. Each day ended with the same bike ride, but uphill. I learned to tell time by counting the hours backward from sunset, fists over the horizon, to figure out when I needed to start the ride to be home for dinner.

When I was little, it felt like the water was always cold – regardless of the season. It wasn’t like Florida or Hawaii. In San Diego, you had to brace yourself before you dove in. Today, the waters off Southern California are in excess of 70° Fahrenheit in summer – a far cry from the highs of the mid- to high-60°s I grew up with. While that may not sound like much difference – 70°+ feels a lot warmer than 68° when a wave crashes over you!

At age eight, my family moved to Southern California, and the ocean very quickly became a part of me. I learned to swim. I learned to read the waves. I learned to body surf and boogie board. And in my next life, perhaps I’ll learn to surf. But above all, the importance of the ocean was instilled in me. At more than 70 percent of the earth’s surface area – how can it not become a part of you?

Of course, I loved the beach “lifestyle” – I still do – but it is so much more than that. The ocean was always there. A constant. This immense presence which moderates the climate: air temperature, weather patterns, and even the Sierra snowfall. Now, whenever I return home, I never miss a chance to walk barefoot in the sand. To sit on the beach. To listen to the waves. To photograph. Or to do a drive by – windows rolled down, taking in the smell of the salty air. And it never ceases to be soul filling.

This image is from my visit home this April. A wave of clouds. A glorious sunset. High above a seemingly still ocean

Today is World Oceans Day. Thank you
for helping raise awareness to protect this incredible body of water – an undeniable resource, full of beauty, power, and life.

Love is...
When your husband still adores you, despite the fact that the Christmas ornaments have not been put away yet…
that there are still poinsettias all over the house…
and that you have decided to try to keep them alive year-round…

I had a thing for poinsettias this year… I think our world seemed so dark that any additional burst of color was not only welcome, but sought after… We’ve hopefully turned a corner both politically and pandemically, cheered on by the spring flowers that are bursting out in bright pinks, purples, and yellows, in addition to the holiday reds and greens that thrived during winter.

With that, we’ll celebrate this holiday of love, filled with bright colors and hope!
Happy Valentine's Day!!

Wow! What a powerful week!

I was so moved by the inauguration, and the potential for – and power of – positive change. Add to that, the incredible ocean blue color of Dr. Jill Bidens’ coat!

Whenever I see this color in the ocean – turquoise, blue-green, teal, sea foam, aqua – whatever you choose to call it, I see strength, power, peace, depth, and movement… it connotes so many of the places I’ve explored near and far, the possibilities life holds, and my desire to create images and share. Now, per the designers , add to this list trust, confidence, and stability, all imbued in Dr. Bidens’ coat!

So, take this as an homage to our country – an incredible bright, vibrant, forward moving country – full of hope and possibilities, celebrated with optimism and renewed hope, represented in a beautiful blue coat, and by a powerful aquamarine wave.
