Dramatic clouds clearing after a big storm meant lots of wind, which isn’t good for shooting wildflowers, but I couldn’t complain too much with awesome clouds like this all day!

“California Gold”

Hiked up to my local poppy field again this evening because I just can’t get enough of these wildflower and river views. Spring in the Sierra Foothills is short, but that’s what makes it even more cherished.

It feels cliché to say, but this place is pure magic. Formerly a part of Bears Ears National Monument, Valley of the Gods has some of the most beautiful assemblages of red rock formations I’ve ever seen. What made it even more special to me was the nearly complete lack of other people around. This is desert solitude at its finest. Spending two days watching the sun rise and set in this unique and spectacular area has made an everlasting impression on me.

A morning like this is going to be hard to forget. Nothing compares to the colors and light observed during a Grand Canyon sunrise. Even the 7 degree F temperature couldn’t negatively affect how overjoyed I felt in this moment.

I've always wanted to see these adorably expressive (but kinda grumpy looking) Western Burrowing owls in the wild, and today I finally found them. Sadly this species is on the decline, especially in Yolo County. Development and conversion to orchard agriculture has severely limited their habitat to the point where there are only around 15 breeding pairs left in Yolo County (according to an article I read published back in 2015). I am unsure about the current population statistics of these owls.

This past summer’s wildflower display at Carson Pass. This is my favorite place in the Lake Tahoe region to photograph the many species of wildflowers that emerge after the snowmelt.
