First tintype made in my studio using my darkroom and it was such a great experience. I grow bored making self-portraits, but it is absolutely the easiest way to test things out for a portrait. Focusing is definitely tedious (I missed focus on this image) but that imperfect nature of a tintype makes it feel even more authentic. With every tintype I make I learn more and progress towards proficiency

Besides already owning a welder I have only invested about $15 into this project for the fancy k***s. I already had the tools I needed and plenty of scrap steel lying around just waiting to be used. Now I can let my tripod rest and use it for other things while keeping this camera set up in the studio full time

I have already grown tired of using a tripod in my studio. The legs obstruct a bunch of space and movement so I dug into my scrap metal pile last night and started dreaming up a plan. It won't be as elegant or refined as a vintage studio stand, but it also won't cost as much as my mortgage payment 🤣

11 months ago I made my very first tintype photograph with my 1984 Chevrolet K10 as the subject. I drive this truck nearly every day and it holds a special place in my heart and life. This truck has helped build my home, my family, and now has helped to build my own portrait studio to carry on learning and practicing the art of wet plate collodion photography.

Well, my wife decided she was tired of smelling collodion in the house (though she said varnishing inside is fine😅) and told me to do what I must to get my own studio space.

It won't be much, but it will be the first time I have had my own "studio" space since picking up a camera 20 years ago.

What should I be absolutely sure to include inside?

One of my favorite parts of a portrait are the eyes, specifically when the sitter makes direct eye contact with the camera.

However, a little mystery in an otherwise light-hearted portrait can have a fun feeling to it as well.

I wasn't planning on making any portraits this day, but my best friend stopped by with his family and I had my little studio set up in the living room and was able to convince his son to sit for a couple of portraits.

After this shot, I added a reflector below him to bounce a little light up under his hat which worked quite well. But this first plate is still a keeper in its own way.

Practice, practice, practice. This medium will humble you every chance it gets, especially when trying to create an image at 7,200 feet above sea level in near-freezing temperatures with a process that is heavily affected by temperature changes. Creating tintypes outdoors in natural light is definitely my next hurdle and I cannot wait to get more opportunities to practice!

Got my hands on a Dallmeyer 3B Reproduction by Eckhardt Optics recently and couldn't wait to test it out. I wanted an original Dallmeyer but I'm not made of money. This lens, so far, has been pretty sweet!
