Wedding photography is a very specific specialty within the field of photography. After more than two decades as a wedding photographer, and a recent streak of potential clients seeking the cheapest possible route, I feel the need to put a voice to where I stand in the industry.
Being successful as a wedding photographer runs deeper than having top of the line equipment, and strong business skills. As a client, you are paying for so much more. We have to walk into a room… most of the time not knowing a single person…feel the vibe and match the energy in that room and make new best friends instantly. We often need to diffuse emotional situations, and give the bride or groom some calming words to help them through their wedding day jitters. Not to mention fixing hair and makeup mishaps when they occur. All of that while making the best lighting decisions, and making quick adjustments each moment as the day unfolds. It is our job to help each client build an ideal timeline, based around the most ideal lighting scenario… and also offer an immediate backup plan when the timeline gets off track…which happens a good majority of the time. On top of all of that our job to make magic… And produce the most beautiful photos of your life while working under the pressure I just described, without missing a moment. It takes a special skill set to do all of this while also making you feel comfortable enough to be in the moment and enjoy your day.
When it comes to the most magical day of your life please be careful in choosing your photographer. Make sure they are primarily, in fact, a wedding photographer. There are wildly talented studio, sports and landscape photographers out there, to name a few. But choosing them to capture your most special day is like hiring a roofer to pour your foundation. Make certain that who you choose has experience with everything above. They won’t be cheap and there is a very good reason for that…
