I was putting together one of my random rants where I suddenly had a lot to say, and then I realized it was waaaaaay too much for one post. So, I’m going to do a mini series with this one.
I’ve been told I am “too much” since I was a child. Too loud. Too opinionated. Too emotional. Has that toned down any of what I am? No. Even if it sometimes bothered me in the past, I have and will continue to be my fullest self.
I’ve realized that this whole idea of being "too much" runs deep into how I approach photography, too. I embrace rules and follow them strictly, but the way I apply those rules is what makes the work mine.
A photographer's style is so much more than just the colors or the pretty edits. Honestly, that's the shallow end of the pool. So many pieces play a part in determining what the final images say and how they feel.
Think of it like our Photographer DNA. Every detail, every choice, every instinct—from the way we light a scene to the places we choose to shoot—comes together to create a unique feeling and message. It's like our genetic code; the unique combination is what makes a photographers style, rather than one specific thing.
The message I strive to show in my work is one of honesty. But not just the surface kind of honesty. I want the type that is so true it can’t hide anymore—it has to burst out of you. I want to capture the wild, true core of you—the part society tries to squeeze into a neat little mold. Because guess what? Those are your best parts!
There is a lot I want say about all the things that make a photographer's work different. Like posing, time of day, movement, and editing. But next week I’m going to start with location and why it’s never “just” a backdrop.
In the meantime….What's one thing you think makes a photographer's style unique?
