I so wish I could go back and tell myself these three things, 8 years ago, when I first started photography:
1. Don’t rush the camera upgrade.
Having a crappy camera doesn’t matter if you’re a good photographer. And a crappy camera can teach you how to become a good photographer way more than a fancy camera can.
2. Don’t edit with the fads.
I might get my head ripped off with this one (but remember these are tips that I WOULD GIVE MYSELF if I could). Changing your editing style every few years doesn’t portray you as a professional. And someone who hired you a year out for their wedding might not end up loving their photos as much if your editing style changes since they’ve hire you. Some little tweaks here and there to improve your image quality and utilize Lightroom upgrades is different story.
3. Find your niche.
Mimicking other photographers is just going to end up hurting you in the end. Find what makes you unique and capitalize on that. I promise you that you don’t want to “blend in” with all the other photographers, you want your style to be recognizable and uniquely YOU.
