I’ve opened a very limited number of 25-minute private studio sessions on Sunday, November 15th in downtown Sandpoint.

Think: bright white, beautiful studio light, genuine smiles, kids being kids, or the whole family too, in photos you’ll actually want to put on your Christmas card. ✨

Each session includes 3 full-resolution digital images, so you can choose your favorites after seeing the gallery (no buying anything you don't want!)

Of course, the judges only had to look at the picture. Me, over here, wasn't just the photographer but also the mom who had to get the mud-pit enthusiast cleaned up afterward! 😂

My first ‘This is Reportage: Family’ award. Just under 4,000 images entered across their 2 contests with only 35 Reportage Family Awards given. And somehow, this muddy little moment with my son made the cut. 🥹

Still scrubbing the shower over here, but so happy to see this messy moment being celebrated.

I think there’s a better question than “How old is your photographer?”
And it’s “Are they still really good at what they do?”

There’s an odd conversation happening right now about whether Gen Z couples should avoid “too old” wedding photographers because they might not understand their humor, aesthetic, visual language or energy.

I call bu****it.

Can photographers get stale? Absolutely. If you stop growing, experimenting and pushing your craft, it will show in any line of work.
But age ≠ stale.

A client from a 2012 wedding in the Bahamas emailed me this weekend looking for a photo, sending me spelunking into the deep, dusty archives.
It was kind of cool to see our super old work after so many years.
But if 2012 Sam + Matt were making photos like this, I feel pretty damn good about 2026 Sam + Matt.
Not because we used to suck, but because while I stand by my old work, we’ve also clearly dedicated ourselves to this craft.

The cameras have changed. Our work has changed. WE CHANGED: We’ve gotten BETTER.

Decades of weddings teaches you things you simply cannot shortcut: anticipating moments, reading a room, knowing how a variety of weddings flow, and instinctively knowing where the story is going to hit and how to frame it.

I’m not interested in proving I’m “Gen Z enough.”
I just want to keep getting better. I want to keep the excitement of a young creative with the experience of someone who has been doing this for the long haul.

My longterm GOAL is to be the old lady photographer.
My millennial mom energy still serves me pretty well on a dance floor. 😂
Give me the years and all the Gen Z brides, especially the ones who want to go on cruises or destination resorts in tropical locations!

A very big little thing happened just right now.

And I’m probably “supposed to wait to post until morning for engagement”. It’s well, well past my bedtime in the middle of the night.
I’m usually out by 9:30 *yawn* but tonight I stayed up. And up. And up. I told my husband I was coming to bed an hour ago. But I’m still up.
And I don’t know why I’m up, but I clicked open my email one last time before bed and there was an email I did not expect in the least.

One of my 2026 wedding photographs was selected for Fearless Photographers Collection 100. 🥹

Being an artist is weird. Even if you’ve been successful, perhaps it’s human to constantly wonder if you’re any good at something as subjective as art.
I think I participate in photography awards because they’re anonymous. Beyond language, beyond what gear you have, beyond who your client is, or how old you are or where you come from, photography is a visual art communicated in a universal language.

To have a panel of professional judges select my work against talent across the world is just… validating. So I try to remember to submit and participate, even years like this one where I haven’t been shooting all that much. I managed to place Top 10 for WPJA last year without shooting much then either, but I’d still never won a Fearless wedding award.

Fearless has a strict membership process, and once you’re accepted to even submit your work, they receive thousands and thousands of entries, citing that only 1–3% of submitted photographs ever receive an award.
And this late-night, one-last-email check was a letter congratulating me on just that.

I think I love wedding photography so much because it can never be perfected, only practiced.
It’s a craft I’ve dedicated so many years to learning, and every wedding still reminds me how much I have left to learn.
So being recognized by some of the tippy TOP top dogs in this industry is a pretty damn sweet way to end the day.

A surprise wedding that lands my couple right IN Lake Pend Oreille? Say less.

We love big weddings, backyard weddings, micro weddings, destination weddings, national park weddings, luxury weddings, and now we love SURPRISE weddings; we’re here for all of it.

But this was a first: my husband Matt put down his camera, pulled out a Bible, AND MARRIED THEM RIGHT THEN AND THERE.
My husband is not only a “second photographer” but he is officially an officiant too. 😂

You bring the person. We’ll bring the cameras. And maybe the officiant too.

Some love stories are so deeply rooted in a place that you don’t need to manufacture a thing.

A cowboy hat. Dusty boots. Horses running through the pasture. The last light of the day settling over North Idaho.
And two people who have known each other since first grade.

We’ve had a lot of wildfire smoke hanging in the sky over Sandpoint this summer, but instead of rescheduling we just embraced it for this Western Lifestyle engagement photoshoot.

I’m always excited to photograph weddings, but photographing for a friend’s daughter feels pretty darn special and I can’t wait to photograph her on horseback in a wedding dress this Fall!

Day 5 Stills | Harsh Light Portraits | 14-Day Wedding Photography Challenge

Harsh midday sun is one of the least favorable lighting scenarios. Hard shadows, squinting eyes, add snow and we have the absolute worst time of day to shoot available light.

So that’s exactly when Matt and I decided to challenge each other to ten minutes with our teen daughter in the backyard!

Day 4 | Flat Lay Styling | 14-Day Wedding Photo Challenge

Luxury wedding detail styling… but make it fifth grade.

It’s day 4 of sharpening my wedding photography craft and today I gave myself just a few minutes today to create a flat lay of my 10 yr olds top favorite things in the whole world.

I started in his favorite place: outside in the snow on his sled!
But decided to bring a handful of his treasures back inside for another try before the timer buzzed.

Brides don’t hire me for my flat lays, they hire me for story telling documentary photography, but all great stories need context and wedding details are important. . So while I don’t squander your wedding day piddling around with cufflinks, I still value your unique bits and bobs.

If I can do this kid chaos, your wedding details are safe with me.
