Y’ALL. I’m alive 😅
Just not finding much time to post lately but I promise I’ve got some absolute GEMS coming your way! 💎

We’re home and editing a wedding that somehow landed somewhere between Game of Thrones and full-blown aviation obsession… at the actual Orlando Sanford airport! ✈️

Sharing one where the dance floor just explodes and you can feel it all over again.
SO MANY MORE MOMENTS coming soon. Can’t wait to share! (& yes, it’s b&W but it’s mine, not Matt’s! lol)

In the meantime, there’s dirt under my fingernails from the Spring garden, kids running wild on spring break, and life feels very full in the best way.

Happy spring 🌱

Happy birthday to my snuggliest meatball!

The decision to go from 2 to 3 children was a year of discussion, but I don’t think we ever talked much about adding a 4th. It was just so obvious that our family would not be complete until we had our Atticus.

He is the balance. Next-level laid back, incredibly kind, and painfully cute. The honor of being his mama and watching him grow is one of my life’s greatest gifts.

Atticus looked at me this morning and said “If it’s your birthday… where are the decorations?” 🎈

So while he napped, we got to work. Big brother helped me hang the “Happy Birthday” banner for the party we’re throwing this weekend for Atticus, luckily we’re the two shark lovers of the family so why not just hang it today? 🦈

Birthdays in our family always seem to show up in clusters. My dad and brother are only a day apart. Three of the four guys in our household now celebrate within two weeks of each other. And the baby and I? Just days apart too. Apparently we like to party in bulk around here.

Matt has been lobbying hard for a new lens. I told him he doesn’t take enough photos to justify it, so today he picked up the camera and snapped this. It wasn’t the birthday portrait I would have expected, but it’s just right. Kind of like all of this life, and especially growing into my 40’s. It’s not what I expected, but it’s just right.

Tell me, does your family have “birthday seasons” too? 🎂

Day 6 Stills | Slow Shutter with Rear Curtain Sync | 14-Day Wedding Photography Challenge

Wedding dance floors can be chaos.
Variable lighting. Fast movement. No do-overs.

So after a dance fitness class I teach (), I asked some gals to hang around for an extra two songs. I had 6 minutes to make a shot worth posting on our dance page in just about the most terrible conditions I could come up with, a cluttered dark dance studio, and entire wall of mirrors framed by a single rope light and little marquee, with the really fun DJ light …mounted against the mirror, so I couldn’t use it to add color or dimension.

If this was a wedding, I’d have walked in with second strobe mounted ready to go, but this challenge was about bare bones slow shutter drag and rear curtain flash from a single strobe.
Because sometimes weddings move fast and I want to know that no matter the room or the lighting, I can walk in, adapt, and make it look like it felt.

Day 6 | Slow Shutter with Rear Curtain Sync | 14-Day Wedding Photography Challenge

Available light photographers panic here.
Dark rooms where even the highest ISO isn’t going to take you very far.

I set up a time constraint exercise in the most terrible conditions I could come up with.

Then practiced. Slow shutter. Rear curtain sync.Let the ambient light streak.Freeze the faces.
Because if I can control a flash in here, I can control it anywhere.

Dance floors shouldn’t look flat. They should feel like movement.

Day 5 Stills | Harsh Light Portraits | 14-Day Wedding Photography Challenge

Harsh midday sun is one of the least favorable lighting scenarios. Hard shadows, squinting eyes, add snow and we have the absolute worst time of day to shoot available light.

So that’s exactly when Matt and I decided to challenge each other to ten minutes with our teen daughter in the backyard!

Day 5 of sharpening the craft! Check out the reel for video version with settings.

Also… WHO WON?
Sam - color 🎨🫶
Matt - monochrome 🖤🤍

Day 4 Stills | Flat Lay Styling | 14-Day Wedding Photo Challenge

Luxury wedding detail styling… but make it fifth grade!

My 10 year old’s top favorite stuff, styled in just a handful of minutes like we’re at a luxury wedding.

Day 4 | Flat Lay Styling | 14-Day Wedding Photo Challenge

Luxury wedding detail styling… but make it fifth grade.

It’s day 4 of sharpening my wedding photography craft and today I gave myself just a few minutes today to create a flat lay of my 10 yr olds top favorite things in the whole world.

I started in his favorite place: outside in the snow on his sled!
But decided to bring a handful of his treasures back inside for another try before the timer buzzed.

Brides don’t hire me for my flat lays, they hire me for story telling documentary photography, but all great stories need context and wedding details are important. . So while I don’t squander your wedding day piddling around with cufflinks, I still value your unique bits and bobs.

If I can do this kid chaos, your wedding details are safe with me.

DAY 3 | Scene Setting | 14-Day Wedding Photography Challenge

Today’s assignment?
Long shutter. Motion. Panning. Action!
But plot twist.

We took FIVE kids (the youngest is two 🤡) up to the ski resort, and survival became the real sport.

So instead of chasing motion blur,
I gratefully and simply took what was there.

It’s important for any wedding gallery to have scene setting images, to give portraits context. So while I didn’t pan the camera for action shots, I did capture our day in another way, through stillness.

On the drive back down the mountain, the view truly stopped us in our tracks.

The kind of landscape that reminds you why you carry a camera in the first place.
Not the shot I planned,
But maybe the one I needed.

Forever in awe of this little corner of the planet. Check my reels for video version of day 3 and shots with settings!

DAY 3 | Scene Setting | 14-Day Wedding Prep Photography Challenge

This challenge became forcing myself to carry around a camera, even when highly incovenient! But I’m calling it the SCENE SETTING day.

We’re gearing up to shoot a wedding soon, so to prepare I came up with a hay-wired idea at 4 am to practice a different facet of wedding photography EVERY DAY for two weeks.

Day 3 and it didn’t turn out quite like I planned, but twists and turns of events feels very WEDDING PREP too.

I planned to pan the camera for action shots. Instead, I caught what I could between the chaos of hauling 5 kids (2 of them toddlers!) to the ski resort on little zf with a 40mm prime.

On the way back down, we caught the most stunning view of our little lake-side downtown. I still can’t believe we get to live here. *pinch me* As I’m doing every day, check out the next post for extra stills.

DAY 2 STILLS | 14-Day Wedding Photography Challenge

We piled the kids into the car and went downtown for the a Winter parade and block party with performers. And then we managed to get a few wide angle photos while too. 🤣
