⁠The hike to Heart Lake from Castle Lake in the Castle Crags Wilderness just outside of Mount Shasta, is easily a top 5 hike for us. Especially when done at sunset. 🌄⁠
⁠
The trail starts at Castle Lake, and is roughly 3 miles round trip, with decent elevation gain, making it a moderately challenging hike. But the payoff at the end, is WELL worth the effort.⁠

Many of California’s national parks hit are just as incredible, if not better, to visit in winter! From desert landscapes that are far more comfortable to explore in cooler weather, to parks that transform with snow, winter can be one of the best times to explore these parks.

Here’s a mini-guide to help you figure out which parks to visit this winter. ⬇️

🌲 Redwood National & State Parks
🌧️ Winter brings more rain to the redwoods, but that also means lush forests, misty trails, and fewer crowds. Just bring a rain jacket and embrace the moody vibes!

⛰️ Death Valley National Park
☀️ Summer temperatures can be dangerously hot, but winter is prime time for exploring Death Valley’s otherworldly landscapes, hiking, and scenic drives in much more comfortable weather.

🌳 Sequoia National Park
❄️ Summer is peak season, but winter brings snow-covered giant sequoias and a completely different forest experience.
⚠️ Just be prepared for chain requirements, and winter conditions.

🏞️ Yosemite National Park
❄️ Yosemite’s summer crowds thin out in winter, when snow transforms the valley into a beautiful winter landscape. Waterfalls may be less dramatic, but the snowy granite cliffs and quieter trails are worth the trip. ⚠️ Just be prepared for chain requirements, and winter conditions.

🌵 Joshua Tree National Park
☀️ Summer heat can make hiking miserable, but winter brings cooler temperatures that are ideal for exploring the park’s otherworldly rock formations, desert trails, and iconic Joshua trees.

⛰️ Pinnacles National Park
🥾 Winter is one of the best times to explore Pinnacles, with cooler hiking temperatures and fewer crowds.
⚠️ Just check trail and cave conditions before you go.

🌊 Channel Islands National Park
🐋 Winter brings opportunities to spot migrating gray whales, along with fewer visitors and dramatic ocean views.
⚠️ Weather can be unpredictable, though, so check sea conditions before booking your boat trip.
