👇This is an Antarctic Type B orca! In the deep freeze of the Southern Ocean, these intelligent apex predators accumulate microscopic algae called diatoms on their skin, giving them this golden, yellowish hue.

Cruising through the slush 🧊

🐋Check out these incredible Antarctic Type B2 killer whales (also known as Gerlache killer whales) navigating the dense pack ice!Unlike your typical black-and-white orcas, these polar specialists sport a unique yellowish-gray tint on their lighter patches. This distinct coloring comes from microscopic algae called diatoms that build up on their skin in these freezing, nutrient-rich Southern Ocean waters.

These smaller Type B orcas travel in large, highly social pods and are absolute masters of navigating the frozen edges to hunt. There is nothing quite like watching their sleek dorsal fins slice effortlessly through the sub-zero slush!
