As many local visitors know by now, among the mountainous regions of Barlow Pass is home of the Bighorn Sheep.
This is one of the many scenic areas, as you travel along Indian Route 8 in San Carlos Apache Reservation.
The terrain shifts dramatically from open desert and grasslands into dense oak and pine woodlands.

As we look out at the reflections of the landscape upon the pond, we are reminded of the generations of Apache women who walked these lands. For centuries, the burden basket was far more than a simple tool for carrying firewood, wild harvests, or water. It was an extension of the woman herself, a testament to her central role as the sustainer of life, the caretaker of the family, and the keeper of cultural knowledge.

10/05/2026

Here we have Julius Hostetler, Superintendent for the Geronimo Hotshots. San Carlos AZ.
The San Carlos Apache Forestry Program will be honoring all Geronimo Hotshots from 1996-Present.
This will mark the 30-year legacy of the program.
It will take place October 7th. 2026.

These several weeks, I had the pleasure of meeting up with “Hoss", his fellow crew members, and past hotshots.
I taken some video footage and portraits that will be presented at this event. I am currently working on the project, but I wanted to share a small portion of my work.

What can I say, The time I was working on the fire line. Julius has always been a leader to follow, listen, and learn with. Memorable fire assignments, spectacular mountain views with streams, and of course good times with fellow hotshots.
I would like to mention the friends we lost along the way. We all played a role in the world of fire, to get the job done and come home. We wouldn't be a crew without them and their help. Rest easy bros!
