143 years in the making!
RiverGlass is complete. 🍺

19th-century beer bottles, pulled from the San Antonio River and given new life as public art. Fragments catalogued--maker's marks decoded.

Every shard a piece of San Antonio's hidden history.
And the story doesn't stop at the surface. Hidden within the sculpture are codes β€” the glass telling its own story. Scan them and hear how breweries dumped their bottles in this very river, how leaders fought to restore it, and how dredging the river brought it all back to light.

This sculpture honors the environmental heroes of San Antonio who fought to restore it, protect it, and love it. Fabricated in terrazzo by Venice Art Terrazzo Company right here in San Antonio.

Supported by The Hollomon-Price Foundation, The Brown Foundation, The Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation, and the San Antonio River Foundation.

See it in person at the Lock & Dam on the Riverwalk.
529 Brooklyn Ave. (Free parking in the vacant lot).

Prosit, San Antonio!

I’ve been doing a lot of flying these days. Back and forth to China mostly to finish up a project. Another clock in Hangzhou. More on that later…

Over the years, every time I fly, I try to catch a window seat and do some slitscan images. Here are some standouts from my extensive library! Not every shot is a winner. There’s a lot of randomness. But that’s photography for youβ€”put yourself in the right place at the right time and be prepared with the right camera. Then let the universe surprise you.

Color field painting? Dripping landscapes? This is definitely a different kind of perspective.

Final stop Tokyo πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ As a part of my visa free entry into China, I had to enter from Hong Kong and depart through a 3rd country. So this presented me with an amazing opportunity to spend two days in Tokyo checking out local art, food, peace, and chaos.

To complete my project in Hangzhou, China, I will need to return to Asia within the next month or two. Stay tuned for more travel updates 🌎 ✈️

I only spent 24 hours in China πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³ so it was all business. Went straight to the factory, just outside of Guangzhou, where my latest clock is being made. It made sense to make it here since most LEDs come from this area and this factory specializes in large public art sculptures. I'll be back in China in a month or two to put the finishing touches on this piece at its permanent home in Hangzhou.

Now I'm off to Tokyo πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ for a couple days before heading home!

"Evergreen", 2001

I have so many photos of trains that I could probably start a whole new account just for train content πŸš‚πŸš…πŸš‹

When you've been photographing them for over 40 years, it's fun to repost and reflect.

This is the last train for this week, but I'll likely be posting some more very soon.

"Train, Clouds", 1979

At 18-years-old I stopped and snapped this picture because I found it amusing that I noticed a train in the clouds above a real train. I was just beginning to discover photography, working in black and white and chasing subjects that felt bigger than me. Trains quickly became one of those subjects.

Something about them has always fascinated me. Maybe it's the way they move relentlessly forward, carrying us through landscapes and through time itself. Perhaps that is why they have stayed with me all these years.

From that first black and white image to today, I have continued to photograph trains, now using techniques like time-lapse and long exposures that created images that my 18-year-old self could never have imagined.
