Thinking back to a week ago when my lungs were filled with sea air and my pulse slowed down and all I could hear was the wind whipping by and the faraway calls of seagulls. Now, I’m back to reality and trying to figure out my next move. I’m feeling both excited and overwhelmed by the possibilities. But I know I’m ready for whatever is next.

Little Lyric! What a delight it was to film my baby cousin with her family. Their love for her is apparent in every scene and it’s easy to see why she’s so special - this beautiful child is wild-eyed with wonder. It was an honor to capture this time in her life when everything (even dirt!) is new and captivating.

Hope. That’s what I felt this March. As opposed to the uncertainty, fear, and melancholy of one year ago.⠀

Three of the four of us are now vaccinated! And today, Pfizer said they plan to seek emergency authorization use of their vaccine for 12-15 year olds. Soon, I hope, we will all be vaccinated. ⠀

I’m dreaming of summer road trips to see family we’ve missed so much; coffee with friends again; seeing my kids’ spirits come alive when they can spend time with friends. I can’t wait to hug so many people!⠀

As a member of the Filming Life Academy, I created a film for their first challenge. The Jan/Feb 2021 theme was “Unexpected”.

Now that my kids are teenagers, it's tough to get them to play along when it comes to letting me include them in my family films. I'm learning to tailor the films to their interests and to get their input by inviting them to help select the music. That way they're more interested in participating (most of the time!).

This film is about my 13yo son's passion for playing basketball. He works hard to achieve his basketball goals and I'm only too happy to watch and film him as he grows.

There’s something incredibly special about old video footage, even when it’s not perfect. Even when you captured it on your not-so-great ancient video camera or old, out-of-date-even-back-then mobile phone. You get to hear your child’s three-year-old voice, listen to them parrot things back to you in their adorable way, hear your baby babble and try to say, “Daddy!”

I’ve been spending time in our past lately, finding new ways to include old footage into new films. I love how this one turned out!

We spent this summer trying to find our new normal. By August, we seemed to have found it...for now anyway, until things change again.⠀
⠀
We figured out how to host a few friends in socially distanced backyard gatherings. We felt more comfortable going shopping and eating at restaurants with patios more than we had since early March - never without our masks and hand sanitizer (which still feels a little strange).⠀
⠀
School started (virtually) and we adjusted to getting up earlier and troubleshooting Zooms again.⠀
⠀
Here’s hoping the fall brings lower cases of COVID, cooler weather, and more harmony in the world.⠀
