The Calm Before The Storm.

Taken the 36 hours before Tropical Storm Beta makes landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast.

After a windy day, the effects of the tropical storm was already being felt in Rockport, Texas. Just before sunset, the winds calmed enough for me to snag this 30 second exposure of Copano Bay. I’m sure the view is much different this morning.

There is always a storm. There is always a clearing after the storm. You get to choose what to focus on. This shot was taken in Mossel Bay, in the Western Cape of South Africa. Canon 5D MKIV, mounted with the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS USM The shot was at 1/2000 at f/4.5 ISO 200. The colors of South Africa are always stunning and never cease to amaze me.

When the world looks so dark and gloomy, I tend to see the brilliance in what has been placed in front of me. This shot was taken in Mossel Bay, in the Western Cape of South Africa. While still wearing a hard brace on my right hand, I managed to support my Canon 5D MKIV, mounted with the Canon 70-200. The shot was at 1/2000 at f/4.5 ISO 200. The colors of South Africa are always stunning and never cease to amaze me.

My work is not always glamorous, but it’s important to my client so it’s important to me. The ability to do some work home during these crazy times is a blessing.

On any given night, not so long ago, the sidewalks along South Congress was the place to go to see and be seen. These days, they are mostly empty. These days, the world is a drastically different. As people stay home and business shutter their doors and windows, I’m left wonder what tomorrow will bring. For me personally, I have faith in the people and faith is human perseverance.

I was shoulder to shoulder with 100,000 of my closet friends at the foot of the Berlin Wall when it came down.
I have navigated the destroyed and flooded streets of New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit.
I got to be a Resident Alien of Iraq for 13 months, protecting complete strangers.
Last night, I once again got to document a major historical event as I toured Austin, Texas. Seeing the streets virtually empty, was eery and awe inspiring at the same time.
The lack of people on the streets was matched by a lack of police presence. I imagine the police have been freed up to concentrate on other issues facing this city.
These may be crazy times, but one this is for certain; we will be back.
Be safe out there.
Be courteous.
Be nice.

Having the opportunity to photograph a massive bull moose in his natural environment was beyond exhilarating. For over ten minutes, My heart raced with each click of the shutter, knowing the moose is the largest big game species and one of the most dangerous in Colorado.

Using the Canon 70-200L 2.8 IS USM mounted to the 5D MKIV, I was able patiently and safely snap away without disturbing or aggravating this massive beast.

If you should happen to see a moose in the wild, please do yourself a favor and keep a safe distance.

Never quit. Never give up. Never stop. My goal is to keep moving forward.

When all the elements for an image come together, you know it immediately. This was one of those shots. The waters had calmed on the Guadeloupe River and its banks were free of people. Racing the fading light of sunset, I was able to steady the tripod in nearly chest deep water as I prepared to capture this scene.

Take a short ride from Kenton up the Kariegar River in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and you will come to a place of absolute beauty. My trips to Sibuya Game Reserve have never left me disappointed. Getting close enough to a pride of lions so I could capture a few images was beyond exhilarating. To see this family interact with each other was not that different from watching parents manage their own teenager.

The Tower Bridge at sunset left me in awe and wonder of the this great feat of engineering. Without my tripod, I rested my Canon MKIV with a Sigma 12-24 Art on a wall, leveling it with my backpack.

It’s no the image that makes an image special. It’s the story behind the image. In 2014, I had the opportunity to photograph 3 white rhinos in the wild. 3 months after my time with them, they were illegally hunted, poached for their horns. Each of them suffered an unnecessary death. In late 2017, I had the opportunity to return to the same South African bush where I was able to photograph the white rhino shown in this piece. Now an adult, she is the offspring of one of the trio who were taken in the prime of their life. A true story of survival and hope.
