The Trifid Nebula. Somewhere inside this image stars being born… and others that died long before humans existed. We’re just lucky enough to witness the aftermath.

The colors represents real elements glowing in space — hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur — each captured separately and blended together. What looks like art is actually physics.

I love taking these images. I'm always surprised what I'll see.

The telescope gear I use image with inside of my observatory.

The telescope on the left is a 120mm aperture (diameter of the opening) with a field of view of 1.6° x 2.4° (the moon is 0.5° wide). I use this scope for larger nebulas.

The telescope on the right has an 11" aperture, with a field of view 0.3° x 0.5°. I use this scope for smaller objects like galaxies and planetary nebula.

Jellyfish Nebula.

Named for its fluid, drifting shape, the Jellyfish Nebula is the remnant of a star that exploded thousands of years ago. Its radiant arcs and filaments stretch across hundreds of light-years, glowing in hydrogen light that reveals the quiet aftermath of stellar destruction.

This image was created from 53 separate of 7-minute exposures, taken over 3 nights. Then hours of technical calibration, and processing.

The Rosette Nebula.

Shaped by the solar winds of newborn stars, the vast star-forming region glowing with deep warm shades and soft blue light. Captured here in great detail, this image reveals the heart of a stellar nursery where new suns are born.

The Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant, is the expanding remains of a massive star that exploded thousands of years ago, leaving behind an intricate web of glowing filaments.

This image was created using 196 separate 5-minute exposures, taken over three nights, with a 120mm telescope.

I use one of three narrow-band filters at a time. Each blocks light except that coming from hydrogen, sulphur or oxygen. The warm colors in the image are hydrogen & sulphur. The blues are oxygen.
