I started this page to provide a place for pictures, suggestions, and an easy way to interact with my etsy page.

Often a bowl will be predictable. The log that is cut can give a good idea of what a finished bowl will look like. This silver maple was an exception. Between the time of preparing the wood, shaping, drying, and then finishing over a few years, a metamorphosis occurred. The colors changed and the first stages of decay added their finishing touches by eating the sugars in the wood and leaving their signature. I really love this huge bowl.

Another year. I love making wooden bowls. I love that it’s both a quick and a slow process. I love that my wife and kids have someone who still works with their hands outside of the office, when time and energy permits. I don’t do too much that’s special in terms of the shape or form of these vessels. They are all “bowl shaped”. But the value comes from the second life they give to a tree that is no longer standing. Every piece begins with a log on the ground and a chainsaw in my hands. A mentor of mine once sold a piece of furniture and the client admired the details and said, “my kids are going to argue over who gets this after I’m gone.” I quietly hope that a few of those conversations come up each year when I sell my wares. I hope they become something special within a home and hold an appreciation for handmade things that came from the earth. Thank you for buying the things I make. Thank you for the likes, comments, chats, friendship, and well wishes. Now I’ll head out to the shop and start on the next one. If you’ve ever purchased anything from me, I’d love to hear how it’s holding up, if I can answer any questions or if you’d hoped for something different.

Well, ready or not, tomorrow at noon (mountain time) is the RichardsWoodCraft annual bowl sale. It looks like about 65 bowls ranging from $20-$320 and heavy duty cutting/serving boards from $40-$100. With very few exceptions, all the wood came from within just a few miles of my home in Utah. These came from trees that lived out a life of purpose and now get to continue their use in your home. Thank you for the support, interactions, and friendship.

Chainsaw milling is cool, but it’s slow, noises, messy, and a lot of work. This client actually grew up in the home he’s now raising his family in so this tree has been a part of memories all his life. We got 8-3” slabs out of this massive silver maple. He’s a cabinet maker by trade and excited for the dining table and several other projects these will become after the timber dries. We included his oldest son in the process and I know that will be a meaningful experience for the both of them for a long time.

I just finished up taking a 3 day willow pack basket course by the amazing and hosted by I made a lot of new friends and was completely out of my comfort zone doing something I’ve never tried before. Willow regenerates each year and we used a variety of willow from different places with unique character. I’m crossing off “taking a class” from this year’s list of goals. Now back to more bowls.

After prying off the bark on this ash knot, I found this hiding underneath. Just a small bowl, but something I’ll be very excited to see finished in a few months after it dries.

I purchased a crate of various exotic woods from someone whose father was a woodturner before he passed away. Among the woods was a beautiful cube of camphor burl. I’ve always held off on cutting into it as I didn’t have anything specific that it would fit. The his week I cut the cube in half and made these two small bowls. I love them and glad the wood didn’t wait any longer to become something to be admired.

Pear and Russian Olive burls. I’ve had two ugly pieces of wood sitting under my bench collecting dust for a few years. My own neuroses decided that turning them into bowls was essentially “cleaning up my shop”. Welcome to the world, bowls. Will become available at the end of the year.
