Somewhere between the icy chill of winter and the lush, green-infused warmth of summer, spring begins like a gentle current - water and light flow more freely, nourishing and awakening the world into new growth and splendid blooms. The transformation between seasons always brings with it a little wonder.

On May 16, 2026, I look forward to exploring the spring waterfalls of Connecticut with a group of photographers lead by Timothy Keeney, a Connecticut-based landscape photographer, whose passion for waterfalls and photographic work inspired me to reconnect with landscape photography and opened the door to learning about and exploring the beautiful waterfalls of New England and beyond.

Due to a conflict of schedule, a couple members of our group can no longer join us on Saturday, May 16, 2026. If you would like a chance to learn from Tim, photograph the beautiful waterfalls of Connecticut, and to connect with other kind, waterfall-loving photographers in an educational, fun, community-building adventure, please DM me and I can let you know the details! Happy waterfall hunting!

Yesterday, I could not have asked for a more beautiful day to enjoy waterfalls…recent rain, an overcast sky, a slight chill to the air…with only one mosquito in sight (….and it was even on the ground!). The drive through northern Connecticut was also lovely, with an array of flowering bushes and trees in peak bloom. I so enjoyed the sound and feel of the rushing water, watching the soothing, rhythmic flow as water descended over terraced stone, and the vibrant green carpet of moss draped over river-side rock. It was just what my soul needed.

It has been fun surfacing images from past adventures. It has also been entertaining during the review of images to experience personal thoughts that range from, “okay, I guess saw something in that🤔,” to scenes and compositions that still speak to me. This study of the autumn meadow on Mount Timpanogos, while on a return hike from the peak, was one such connection. I love the simplicity of the tree line, the long sweeping shadows from a low sun, and the roll of the meadow in contrast to the texture of the towering peak. Which composition do you like best?

The “almost spring season” 😂. Monday night I was scraping ice off my car and today, a walk in the sunshine with a nippy breeze. As I watch the snow melt, my excitement for the spring flow of waterfalls grows!

An incredible tree in the woods of Washington, shown to us by a kind local. What torsion forces of nature shaped this tree!?! In spite of the forces acting on it, the tree grew skyward and strong, a stark contrast to the surrounding trees of the forest in which it dwells. No doubt that torsion forces such as these would have been intense to endure, but the end result forged such unique character and strength.

I poem I love, by Douglas Malloch, shares much of the feelings I have about this tree and the roll of challenges in life.

Good Timber

“The tree that never had to fight
For sun and sky and air and light,
But stood out in the open plain
And always got its share of rain,
Never became a forest king
But lived and died a scrubby thing.
The man who never had to toil
To gain and farm his patch of soil,
Who never had to win his share
Of sun and sky and light and air,
Never became a manly man
But lived and died as he began.
Good timber does not grow with ease,
The stronger wind, the stronger trees,
The further sky, the greater length,
The more the storm, the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow.
Where thickest lies the forest growth
We find the patriachs of both.
And they hold counsel with the stars
Whose broken branches show the scars
Of many winds ad much of strife.
This is the common law of life.”

A walk down memory lane. While preparing for some upcoming travel, exploring the possibilities of what I would like to see and experience, my mind fondly returned to my visit to Ireland. In reviewing the images, I came across this tree - something I had clearly enjoyed at the moment, but have long since forgotten. For me, the ability to preserve fleeting moments of beauty and joy is one of my favorite aspects of photography - to carry forward into the future that which invites peace and brings me back to a moment of delight each time I view the image. Love those walks down memory lane! Speaking of upcoming travel, if you know of any beautiful lone-trees in a sweeping meadow with open skies, or nestled quietly in a vast landscape somewhere in the UK, and are willing to share the location, please send me a DM!
