SCRAPEthePAINT began in the summer of 2011. The purpose of the project is to encourage women to begin to look at themselves and their bodies with a new set of lenses. Each participant is photographed in their natural form, free of makeup or photo-retouching. These photos function as an individual challenge to the United States’ standard of beauty. Portraits complemented by the stories of women wor
k together as a voice against a society that encourages conformity to one standard of beauty, and entirely disregards all those that do not meet that standard. Challenging the mass depiction of women’s beauty is essential for all of us. We must remove the facades that we and the world around us have created in order to be able to discover and appreciate who we are. The concept of “scraping the paint” was sparked by the idea that one must first remove the outer layers of their personal realities, thoughts and emotions in order to effectively rebuild what is beneath. Many of us are so absorbed by who we believe ourselves to be that we fail to truly see who we are. Consider the process of restoring an old home; one invests in it because they believe in its potential. We must learn to invest in ourselves. The homebuyer sees that beneath the rundown, rickety, and neglected exterior there is a masterpiece waiting to be revealed. We are tired of the narrow idea of beauty in our culture! There is more than one type of beauty and that extends far beyond the thin, white & painted faces we see each day in the media and in advertising. :) ALL WOMEN ARE WELCOME!!!--teens-to->mature-aged women!
