Today in Black History, in 1956, comedian and actor Arsenio Hall, the first black late-night talk show host was born (whoo whoo whoo!). The Arsenio Hall Show ran from 1989 until 1994, then again from 2013 to 2014.

Today in Black History, in 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison after serving 27 years of a life sentence, by order of the nearly elected South African President Fredrick W. de Klerk. Arrested for charges of conspiracy to overthrow the state, Mandela went on to be the first President of South Africa to be elected in a fully representative democratic election in December 2013.

This Today in Black History is pretty special to me because, as a kid, I wanted to grow up and become an astronaut. On February 9th 1995, NASA astronaut Bernard Harris Jr. became the first African American to perform a space walk. According to Wikipedia, Dr. Harris clocked 18 days, 6 hours and 8 minuets in space. Even more exciting is that Dr. Harris is still alive and currently serves on several governing boards, including the Board for the National Math and Science Initiative and National Space Biomedical Research Institute, and is the Founder of the Harris Foundation. Dr. Harris, thank you for your shining example of what achievement can mean for young African Americans today.

Today in Black History for February 7th

Sorry for the late post everyone, but here it is... On February 7th 1926, author, historian and founder of The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, initiated “Negro History Week”, which became a precursor to what is now Black History Month. He is know as The Father of Black History.

Today in Black History

In 1954, just three days after Autherine Lucy acceptance to the University of Alabama, she was suspended, and later expelled "for her own safety". Riots broke out for three days, after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered her admission. It wasn’t until 1980, when the university overturned her expulsion, and she finally earned a master's degree there a dozen years later. Talk about a dream deferred.
