Personal note: was really exciting to see U of O runners at this event. I'd moved to Eugene following working for Runner's World, when I took a sales job with an Oregon bike company. It was before the '96 summer Olympics, and while I'd been a cyclist, and had velodrome friends competing, it was the running community in Eugene who really welcomed me in and I learned so much about the hearts of runners. I made life long friends from that experience, and every time I see the Green and Gold - I have to cheer (even though I bleed Blue and White). Now I'm up in Eugene often to visit our own little studying duck.

Some personal comments: what a humbling experience. I can't put to words how completely magnificent watching steeplechase live is. This event has always captured my imagination, and left me in awe of what these athletes pull off. It seems to satisfy my cyclocross race nostalgia but now I'm thinking the barrier dismount/remounts I used to do, didn't seem that bad. (ha!) Hate to use the corny "poetry in motion" cliche, but that's as close as I can get.
