“You’re mom goes to Lockwood.”
That’s painted on the brickwork as you walk into Lockwood Distilling Co in Richardson, and if you catch the Napoleon Dynamite reference, you already have a pretty good idea what kind of place you’re walking into.
Lockwood leans hard into nostalgic pop culture. A Golden Girls painting. Willie Nelson wearing a Lockwood shirt, naturally. And right in the middle of it all is a beautiful still sitting behind glass next to the bar.
I stopped in for and discovered it was Bingo Night. A pleasant and entertaining surprise.
I ordered the BTE (Big Texas Energy) cocktail. Basically Lockwood’s version of an Old Fashioned. It’s spirit-forward and lets their bourbon do the talking. No complaints from me.
Victor, my server, talked me into the crispy Southern chicken sandwich, which turned out to be a damn good recommendation - Thanks Victor!
Sweet-tea-brined chicken, chicken fried, then layered with pimento cheese and sweet pickles. Sweet, salty, savory, crispy... all the important food groups.
And the portions aren't shy. Between the sandwich and the bowl of tots, I probably could've shared.
I didn't.
Lockwood feels less like a tasting room you stop into and more like a neighborhood restaurant that just happens to have a distillery attached — and I mean that as a compliment. Good food, good cocktails, a laid-back family-friendly atmosphere, and plenty of reasons to hang around awhile.
I’ll have a lot more to say about Lockwood in a full write-up later. For now, this was a pretty damn good . 🥃
