Magnolia Meditation - on the eve of celebrating another trip around the sun, I reflected on the year while on tonight's walk. Our family suffered a devastating loss this past year, but I'm thankful for my niece Jennifer leaving us with a life lesson. Even after her body was eaten up by cancer and the side effects of "treatments," she refused to give up. She passed when SHE was ready.
I'm also thankful for having spent time with friends and family out West for the first time in over 10 years. And ice cream. I'm thankful for all the adventures I've had this year. And shrimp po'boys. I'm thankful for moderately-challenging trails. And BBQ. I'm thankful for a healthy year, with my cardiovascular system and kidneys staying relatively well behaved. And good local beer. I'm thankful for opportunities to serve my community and worship God. And seafood. I'm thankful for all my family, especially getting to witness my youngest nephew get married. And a good steak. I'm thankful for retirement and the means to enjoy it - and planning to leave some for family and worthy causes. And magnolias (ha - you thought it was going to be food)!

Susquehanna Sunset - third stop in Danville Pennsylvania and I finally walked down to the waterfront. As much as I enjoy the historic downtown and its architecture, I may have to make sure I do this every time.

Steeple Stroll - whenever I stop in Danville Pennsylvania, I like to walk around downtown. Settled in the late 18th century and incorporated in 1849, the town thrived as a transportation hub (rail and river), and supporting coal and iron production. It's prosperity is reflected in all kinds of architecture. Today I focused on steeples and spires.

Furry Faceoff - it's about to go down! I guess rabbits swarming the streets are better than rats.

Souls Sold - former company store building of the Allendale Mill (1823), North Providence Rhode Island. Some folks think the concept of company housing, commissary/grocery, and general or dry goods store was developed in mining towns, but no, Samuel Slater's "Rhode Island System" of company housing, stores, schools, and employing families (including children) was invented here. Allendale was built only 30 years after Slater's first mill and also is home to the first spill dam, increasing water power and leveling seasonal flows, on the mighty industrial engine known as the Woonasquatuket River.

False Fortune - probably no luck in this sidewalk 4-leaf clover. Have to admit I was tempted for just a second to pick it up and see what happened.

Cinco Caminata - short hike in an Audubon Refuge. A Rhode Island "bayou" and it ain't New England without a stone wall.
