Back in my Greenpoint, Brooklyn days in the 70’s I was introduced to Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead. There were a bunch of Dead heads who called themselves the Zoo crew. Jack McCabe was one of the merry band leaders of The Zoo Band and is sorely missed. Those were the days of free love and peace over war was all around us. Jack MaCabe, Emil Ferzola and company would break out their acoustic guitars and create a sit in. This was when I learned of the Dead and embraced their music.
My freshman year at Elmira College I hitched a ride to Binghamton to see them play with Donna and Keith. I would never hitch in my life again. Joe Larosa and I made it there in two rides, but in one ride there was at least 3 inches of dust piled high on most surfaces, which was something out of a black and white Alfred Hitchcock movie. It was strange. We got a ride back from some upperclassmen in the back of their pick up truck.
The show was amazing and little did I know it was rated as historical by Dead fans, It was the 1979 Binghamton show where they played China Cat Sunflower , I know You Rider into He’s Gone. The band was really cooking with gas and on the mark. It was a great concert that was over three hours and Jerry was doodling all over the neck.
This photo of Jerry was taken on Central Park South in 1995, which was the year he passed away.
