Another session setup for recording acoustic guitars. Same mic choices as the last session photo I shared but a very different approach to the preamp selection and processing this time. The emphasis isn’t on using a favorite setup, it’s on choosing the right setup for the instrument, the song, the artist, and the desired vibe…

I recorded a song on Saturday that fulfilled a promise made nearly 3 1/2 years ago to the family of an old friend who passed away far too young.

Randy was my best friend and musical partner during my high school and early adult years. In around 1995 he brought me a song idea - a guitar instrumental. I helped him shape and arrange the song. We wrote it together but really - it was his song and I was just along for the ride. We played it live a few times but we never recorded it. Somehow, the song never seemed quite finished and each time we played it, it would be slightly different.

When he died unexpectedly in May of 2023 I promised his family that I would record this song in his memory. After all these years, I still knew it by heart.

I tried a couple of times shortly after his funeral but it just never felt right. I put it on the back burner and honestly felt a little like I was letting him and his family down by not getting it done.

This last Saturday I felt inspired to try again. I took the approach of keeping things very raw and live. My first take was Randy’s part. One take. Done. I had chills. I really felt his presence in that moment and it touched me.

I moved to my part. 2 takes. Done. I felt inspired to add 3 additional parts and moved through them quickly - completely improvising each part.

I kept the processing very simple. You can hear the squeaks and creaks while I shift position. Light room noise in the background. The hiss of analog. I didn’t try to get rid of it - Randy would have wanted it to be real and raw.

I sent an MP3 of the track to his family today - fulfilling a promise I made for an old friend.

It’s a simple song but it’s a special one. It’s called Peaceful Inclinations. I’ll share it with you all soon - rough edges and all. Randy would have liked it that way.

I’ve not been quite as active on social media the last few days but I’m still here - juggling a few different projects, family time, and everything else!

A fun part of my day was a lesson with a young musician where we are starting to mix a song of his. Among other things, I showed him how to get a huge, wide sound with his guitars without using any gimmicky stereo-widening effects. The difference was night and day, and hopefully just one of many “a-ha!” moments this young artist will have as we work through mixing his song.

Interested in learning music production? I have space to mentor and train ONE MORE student this fall. Message me for details.

Today’s setup for recording acoustic guitar… a beyerdynamic m160 ribbon capturing all the warmth and smooth sweetness and a Telefunken Elektroakustik TF51 capturing the big body and sparkling high end. Running into BURL Audio B1D mic preamps, Rupert Neve Designs 542 tape saturation emulators, and with just a hint of optical tube compression from Manley Labs ELOP+. Sounds fantastic!
