One word: Pre-Production. Last night we were prepping for a new song. Specifically, we were working to dial in the perfect tempo and key for this track.

Had we jumped right in we would have recorded it 6.5 beats per minute slower - which sounded great overall but would have robbed the chorus and bridge of the little extra energy they need to stand out.

We also tried 4 different keys. Why? Because the song was originally written in F # but then changed down to E. Then the artist tried D # and F. By the time we started pre-production they weren’t really sure which key to sing in. Every key sounded fine overall but also came with pros and cons.

So - we did a verse and chorus in each key. D # was full and low, sounded fine but needed more drive and urgency. F # resulted in a chorus with great energy and tone but 2 key lines in the versus sounded strained and a bit thin.

F sounded really nice overall - the two lines that sounded strained previously now sounded better, with the upper register having good drive and energy to propel the song forward. But, at the end of the day, E won out. The verse came out more softly, with a gritty sort of “whisp” and those 2 key lines came out full bodied with more rasp, bringing a bit more rawness while still giving a boost in energy. The chorus became slightly more mellow but still had enough energy to push the song forward. The emotion of the song came into focus more. And - as the singer ages or has off days, they will probably be able to continue to sing in the original key rather than having to tune down.

30 minutes in the studio doing pre-production on a song could be the difference between a good arrangement and a great one. A key that can stand forever versus one that needs to be tuned down later. The extra grit and rasp that may be a touch less polished and musical but better delivers the authentic, raw emotion of the song.
