Photographers are so creative and inspiring and their (our?) work is so essential and meaningful and I just really really love our community y’all. ♥️♥️ Thank you in advance for sharing my survey link so I can learn more about how to help others help others!!

Volunteering, activism, “giving back”, “doing good”, community engagement: whatever you call it, spending time helping others is one of the most effective ways of staving off dread and depression. I’m spending another couple days collecting responses to my survey about how the photography community feels about that kind of work — PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE spread the word (and the link) to all the photographers you know. Thank you from the bottom of my cold dead feminist 🖤

Any wedding photographer who has been doing this work for a few years knows that photography skills are only 30-40% of the job. Another 30-40% is business stuff (file organization and storage, blogging, SEO, social media, admin work, contracts, website, networking, sales, etc). The last 20-40% is the intangible skill of making people feel amazing in front of your camera AND being able to do that while navigating the interpersonal, logistical, emotional, and physical cl*******ck that is a wedding. That last little bit is something we are very, very good at.

I am looking for an early-career wedding photographer (women/GNC/POC preferred) in the Richmond/Cville/SWVA area to join me as an apprentice at an awesome q***r summer camp wedding in Vesuvius, VA on October 1. This paid, shooting-optional opportunity is for someone who is looking to improve their "navigating a wedding" skills. You will be invited (and encouraged!) to observe and ask questions as we move through the day and I’ll do my best to explain everything (keeping the couple as my top priority OF COURSE).

🤔How is this different from second shooting?
The couple hasn't requested a second shooter so there is no pressure to produce work for them or cover anything that I won't be present for. Any documentation you do will be a bonus for them (and for your portfolio). The second shooters we typically work with are other experienced professionals who need a break from being the boss but who are completely self-sufficient at weddings. This is an opportunity for a newer photographer to get more wedding experience.

Even when we’re dead tired, even when our rights are being threatened and stripped, even while the planet warms and political misinformation is everywhere and COVID still runs rampant…we are still ever so grateful for love and moment of loveliness.

Y’all. I’ve spent ten minutes trying to write this caption but there are just so many things unethical about having a wedding while you’re COVID positive, we will just say: please. Don’t.

Engagement season is upon us! That means all you newly engaged people are about to be BOMBARDED from all sides with wedding planning tips, tricks, ideas, comments, and opinions. To cut through the noise, we asked our amazing community for their best ~actually helpful~ advice for engaged folks and as usual, they delivered. Our top six picks:
1. ENJOY IT (that, verbatim, was suggested many times). Take some time to revel, bask, and be excited.
2. Wedding planning is a team sport. Weddings are about partnership, not one person’s “Big Day”
3. Focus on what feels right for you as a couple. Ground your choices for your wedding in intention, not obligation or expectation (- ) Do the things you really want to do; you don’t “have” to do anything.
4. Remember that getting engaged is one act/step/stage in your life and your relationship – not an identity. Take a moment to recognize that you and your partner are both constantly changing and growing, and lifelong commitment is important but not the only thing that matters.
5. You’re not on any deadline and you don’t owe anyone answers (PREACH .planet)
6. Ignore any advice other people give you and don’t ask for their opinions. (Say “thanks for that idea” and then do what you want, per )

From one of our favorite couples: “COVID provided us with the opportunity to celebrate these precious moments with the friends and family that mattered most. Our wedding was small and sweet the way we hoped it would be but didn't initially plan for due to social pressure to invite extended family/friends. It also gave us the chance to see who truly loved and respected us when we had a vaccinated only party a year later.”

One of the best parts of this whole photographer gig is getting to follow along and document love stories as they evolve over time. We first captured Annie and Zach years ago during a fun engagement session in the backyard of their first home. We documented their wedding at the Branch Museum a little while later, and as this summer came to a close we did photos on Belle Isle as they prepared to become a family of three. Earlier this month I got to meet baby T and capture him in all his sweet and lumpy newborn glory. I hope in 50 years he treasures the photos we made of his parents and his family all this time.

Our clients are typically pretty ~untraditional~ but that doesn’t mean their weddings can’t be chic as s**t. Claire & Tyler had an absolutely epic party at (Richmond’s “grandest” hotel FYI) that kicked off feeling classic and restrained (ORCHIDS IN THE BOUQUET) but ended the night sweaty and raucous in the best way. Not pictured: the piping hot dance floor and the 10-person band 😍😍😍 // Planned by .

The details of Austin & Jay’s wedding were absolutely stunning: of course, the Common House spaces are jaw-dropping, but the dreamy florals by .m.berry and this adorable monogram banner as a ceremony backdrop were 😍😍😍 // Shot by Sarah and Sam .
