If you’re still deciding when to schedule your ceremony — golden hour might be the answer.

Not because it’s trendy but because the light that comes in during that last hour before sunset is genuinely unlike anything else. It’s warm, it’s soft, it wraps around everything and everyone in a way that no amount of editing can replicate after the fact.

It also means your portraits happen right after the ceremony — when emotions are still high and the sky is doing something worth photographing.

These two are getting married on July 11th and I cannot wait for their wedding day 🤍

We spent an afternoon at Donner Lake at the tail end of winter — one of those cold, crisp days where the snow is still sitting heavy on the mountains and the lake is completely still. I brought a French press to keep us warm and we had coffee at the overlook while the whole Sierra Nevada stretched out behind us.

It was a really good afternoon. The kind that makes you excited for what’s coming next.

A cake just for two. Just them, laughing in front of a vintage Italian mural with a tiny white cake on a gold stand.

There’s no right or wrong way to do a cake cutting.. Some couples love the big moment with everyone gathered around, and some prefer something quieter just for themselves. This one was the latter and it was just as special.

💡 If you’re drawn to the idea of an intimate cutting, ask your baker about doing a small cutting cake separate from your serving dessert. It’s a simple switch that most bakers are happy to accommodate.

That empty room before the doors open is one of my favorite moments of the whole day.

The candles still perfect. Every menu card in place. A two-tier buttercream cake sitting alone under a crystal chandelier — exactly the way they dreamed it when they booked this venue a year ago.
It lasts maybe 45 minutes before the night takes over. I make sure it’s documented before it does.

💡 Tip for couples: make sure your photographer has time built in before guest arrival specifically for reception detail shots. That window is short and easy to miss if it’s not planned for.
