Michelle Florence Studio

Michelle Florence Studio FB says only 101 characters to describe me. HA! That's complicated! I would rather let my work say it Color inspires me. Color impacts our lives.

Growing up, I was never satisfied with a Crayola box of 64 crayons--I needed more! Today, my art is filled with vibrant colors. I was influenced by greats such as M.C. Escher, Picasso, Kandinsky, and Monet. I have always created with a multitude of medias--watercolor, acrylic, oil, pen and ink, glass, fiber, ceramics, and digital. Whether it be with a brush or pen or mouse, I find my inspiration i

n the blank page in front of me. I have won multiple design and photography awards, been featured in magazine, and created two collector series for the Houston USPS. I know I've been on hiatus over the last few years busy with my family and my graphic design career. Now that the kid is grown, it's time to dust off my paintbrushes and let my color shine! Sitting Pretty.
What’s beyond the door?

None of your business. 😇
I’m just gonna sit in my comfy chair.

8×8 gouache on paper.
Small painting. Big decorating opinions.

From the Vault: Sour Puss.

Before there were armadillos, flamingos, ducks and whatever other creatures have wandered into my paintings, there was JackCat.

Sitting in a wildly colorful chair.
Surrounded by pattern.
Judging everyone.

So basically, nothing has changed. 😂

Apparently I need more Saturdays.

It’s been several weeks since I’ve touched The Curious World of Michelle Florence, and #7 has been sitting here giving me the side-eye.

Message received.

Back to the studio. Back to the paint. Back to my regularly scheduled weirdness.

Let’s see what happens.

This month’s Behind the Art: how Fashionista went from an idea bouncing around in my head to 36×36 inches of color, pattern and attitude.

And yes, I saved the scary parts for last.

Barroom Besties 🍸

Three women. Three drinks. Approximately fifty-six opinions.

And judging by those faces, somebody at the other end of the bar has just made a very poor decision. 🤣

Well, that escalated quackily. 🦆

A few days ago, this King Eider was a blank piece of paper. Now he’s painted, matted, packed, and somewhere in the UPS system on his way to the Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest.

No pressure. Just one of the most prestigious wildlife art competitions in the country. 😂

I went into this one knowing it was completely outside my usual lane. Five species to choose from, strict rules, a 7×10 image area, and absolutely no room for my usual armadillo nonsense.

So I picked the fabulous King Eider, gave him a lady friend, broke out the watercolor and gouache, and went for it.

About 12 hours of painting later, he’s officially out of my hands.

Safe travels, ducky. Please don’t let UPS quack you. 😬

So, apparently, this is what happens when I give AI access to my art, my face, and entirely too much information about me. 😂

It designs a billboard.
Who knew this is what I needed?

Now I just need someone to put this thing up on IH 10.

Happy AI Friday! 🤣🤣🤣

Houston has a lot going on beneath the surface. So naturally, I made it me!

Inside Out started with the idea of slicing Houston open to see what might be hiding underneath.

Downtown. Buffalo Bayou. Tunnels. Pipes. Oil. A salt dome. Bats. Traffic. And because apparently reality wasn’t crowded enough, an armadillo moved in.

Geography was rearranged. Scale was abused. Artistic liberties were absolutely taken.

16” × 40” acrylic on canvas

Welcome to Houston, from the inside out.

I have more than 17,000 photos on my phone. 😳

Most aren't great photographs. Some are crooked. Some are blurry. Quite a few were taken through my windshield. But every one started for the same reason: something made me smile.

My camera roll has become a collection of possibilities. And sometimes, those possibilities find their way into my paintings.
