As I look back on the last meet I got the opportunity to photograph, I found a lot of inspiration from everyone who competed and their stories. From the first time competitor to the seasoned vet.

From the whole crew of loaders, spotters and refs to the 80 year old guys still putting up numbers and competing! Everyone has a story to tell.

It is easy to see how hard you will go to lift the weight when you have loved ones and friends cheering you on. Your family both blood and chosen give you so much.

Excited to be back behind the lens in Ankeny, IA this weekend to capture more of these stories!

Missing the meet in Las Vegas tomorrow and gonna do what I can to be able to photo and video the next one in 2025! Can’t wait to see how it all goes. Some heavy lifters out in Vegas! !

From behind the lens:

If you have seen any of my meet photos you may of seen the masterminds behind it all at Heather and Randy. They are both going 100 MPH all day and do everything they can to help the athletes, give back to them and run as smooth of an operation as they can. Over the years I have shot these events for them I can see more and more of the love and passion they have for lifting and the community.

Each year the setup and what the athletes get in return has just progressed. You can see the smiles they have on, from judging to coaching athletes on lifts, to spotting and loading weights, Running athlete briefings and MC’ing between lifts.

You will not see them stop during the day and I can see the hard work they put into it all. It is always a pleasure capturing moments to share and see the fun side outside of all the stress that notably comes with running your own events. Because if anything goes wrong it is on you to fix it.

This past event was no different from teaching now loaders how to be efficient, testing and teaching new judges to help down the road and just keeping the energy high during breaks. It is a fun group of people to be around and learn from. If I lived closer to Reedsburg, WI I would definitely be hitting up their gym to get my lifting in and have a tight knit community to back me up.

So if you’re in the area or want to show up for one of their USPA meets. Look them up! Til the next meet.

I am humbled and grateful for being able to see and shoot all the amazing athletes that took part in last weekends Dairy State Open USPA Meet. Tales from behind the lens:

This is Judith, she was competing in her first powerlifting competition since her surgery 7 months ago at the ripe young age of 71. She started powerlifting when she was 68 and at this competition she set national records for her age group and weight class in the benchpress and deadlift. She was so inspiring and full of energy. She loved being with all the other lifters and especially getting her pointers and support from Randy the owner of . She took all of her lifts very professionally and you could see nothing but joy and elation when she stepped off the platform. It was a pleasure shooting photos of her and the other lifters at this competition. It has also made me start back into weightlifting after my time off. I want to lift big and be like Judith when I am that age. So remember to go out pick things up and put them down to stay strong and independent as you age. Remember someone always has your back and to have a team around you is priceless. Those people want you to succeed and see you hit your highest limits! They will also give you a slap on the back to pump you up or get you focused. It is all perspective, I hope everyone enjoys their day and remember there is someone in your corner rooting for you. This photo from the Love to Lift competition this past weekend was a great show of that support. was always right around their lifters supporting and encouraging them to give it all they have and it showed.

Wow what a great competition to watch and shoot all the athletes compete in at . This photo really showed the joy and emotion all of the competitors had when they would finish their lifts.
