Three mothers. Three different families. The same job.

To every mother — human and otherwise — who keeps showing up: thank you. Today and every day.

We called him Cinnamon. My favorite red fox kit I had the privilege of photographing in 2021 - I still see him around, now an energetic adult.

Fox kits learn to hunt by ambushing each other. Here he’s airborne over his sibling (you can just see the black ear in the grass), all four feet off the ground in the classic mousing arc.

Play is never just play.

Do you know this is one family? The mother is a classic red fox. Her kits are silver phase - same species (Vulpes vulpes), same litter. A single litter can contain red, cross, and silver siblings. It’s one of the most beautiful examples I know of genetic diversity in North American wildlife.

I spent many hours watching this family before this moment happened. In wildlife photography, patience is important, but so are techniques.

If photographing foxes ethically is something you’ve been wanting to learn, I’m running a small-group workshop next month — focused on fieldcraft as much as camera technique. A few spots left. Link in bio, or DM me.

Red, cross, or silver - which one would you have picked as your favorite?

A precious moment from my 2025 trip to the Alaskan wilderness.

This spring cub was still wearing its natal collar (a temporary ring of light-colored fur around the neck and shoulders), which gives a nice sense of just how young it was. I have many more images from that trip that I plan to share in May and June. For now, I am deep in fox photos, but took a little break to process this one because I had a hypothesis I wanted to verify.

It’s nice to see this photo I sold to Visit Mt. St. Helens being used so widely. They had it displayed in the rest area on I5 for quite a few years and it was in their gift shop in various forms. I still vividly remember the weekend morning when I took it. Good memories

This view makes me think ahead to summer hiking.

Wildflowers in full bloom, Mt. St. Helens in the distance, and clear skies that make you want to stay outside all day.

The trails around the Mt. St. Helens area offer a mix of forest walks, lava fields, and open viewpoints that really show how this landscape has changed and recovered over time. It’s a good place to get out, move, and explore something different.

Looking forward to more days on the trail, long hikes, and seeing this place in full summer form again.

Do you have your summer plans yet?

A moment like this can look like luck. But when a once-in-a-lifetime scene unfolds in front of you, the real question is: are you ready to capture the strongest version of it?

Have you trained yourself enough to build the right habits so the right decisions happen almost as muscle memory? So instead of forgetting to use a useful technique or fumbling with settings, you can stay present and capture the moment at its full potential.

That is a big part of what I focus on in my workshops: building the field discipline and habits that help photographers make fewer mistakes and create strong images more reliably.

This fox moment lasted only seconds. Being ready—and, more importantly, having the right habits—made all the difference.

DM me if you are interested in my upcoming workshops.

Happy Fox Pups

Good light does more than reveal a subject. It changes the photograph.

This playful moment between two fox kits became something far more graphic and expressive because of the angle, quality, and timing of the light. Learning to see that—and use it intentionally—is one of the core ideas behind my upcoming workshop. Interested to join? DM me for details.

Shaped by Light

Sometimes the most compelling use of available light comes from working with its edge. In this image, I let the fox kit and its mother fall mostly into shadow, using rim light to define their shape, gesture, and relationship.

When we learn to see light this way, we stop asking only, “Is the light strong enough?” and start asking better questions.

That is one of the central ideas behind one of my upcoming workshops: learning how to make the most of available light throughout different parts of the day.

The subject will not be foxes, but something much more cooperative, so we can slow down, study the light carefully, and explore how different angles, intensities, and qualities of light can completely transform an image.

DM “Light Study” if you are interested.
