Introducing A Soft Becoming’s philosophy…
I didn’t ask them to do this.
I simply watched as her son stepped into her arms; she embraced him and gave him her love. That’s it, it was that simple.
And that’s where my photography journey has lead me.
It was always there, nagging at me in the foreground of my creative mind.
The simplest of gestures towards a loved one have always inspired my images in the past. A lot of my work before included picturesque locations and full styling, but, at the core, it has always been about watching for those authentic interactions and the real moments that I simply couldn’t ever plan for or “pose” or “prompt” a person into.
I didn’t realize it until now but that’s me coming through the lens. That’s my art, my heart, my style, my unique way of seeing the world.
I’m a storyteller at heart and my medium is my camera! I paint with light and I capture what I observe. My whole reason for doing this is to tell a story, my story and others.
Because sometimes the most meaningful photographs happen when no one realizes a photograph is being taken.
That’s the kind of work I want to create indefinitely.
Not perfect moments.
Real ones.
The lingering hug.
The kiss on the forehead.
The quiet pause between conversations.
The moments that would have happened whether I was there or not.
To me, documentary storytelling isn’t about directing your story.
It’s about quietly observing and preserving it.
Because one day, these ordinary moments become the ones you treasure most.
When I chose the name A Soft Becoming, this is what I hoped it would mean.
Not just a work of photography.
But a quiet archive of what it means to be human.
The moments that shape us.
The people who change us.
The ordinary days that, without us knowing it, become the memories we hold closest.
Maybe that’s what a soft becoming really is.
Not the big milestones.
But the quiet moments that slowly shape who we become.
