A New Jersey native, I currently call the southern United States my home and practice as a professional photographer in North Carolina. Photography has not only provided new ways to express my creativity, but continually challenges how I see the world, our impact on it, and vice versa. Forming personal ideas about photography has now inextricably linked to my evolution as an architectural designer shaping to the world. When not doing architecture or photography, I'm occasionally allowed to perform other design work and write published columns and essays. With all honesty, I feel blessed and lucky enough just to do this.

Sterling E. Stevens is an assignment photographer, formally educated to be an architect with over 15 years of design experience. Working primarily throughout the southern United States since 2009, he has collaborated with local and national clients to provide creative architectural photography, blending his artistic eye, architectural knowledge, and environmental awareness into unique and dynamic portraits of designed and built projects. A diversity of companies have implemented Sterling’s architectural imagery within marketing collateral, advertising campaigns, publication, and pursuit of design/industry awards. In addition Sterling is an award-winning environmental fine art photographer. His curiosity for photography emerged during architectural studies in Texas and North Carolina. An acute empathy for surroundings, a trained aesthetic sensibility, and love for road exploration combined to directly influence a parallel foray from a career as an architectural designer to professional photography. Opportunity arose shortly after finishing his formal education as Sterling’s photography began to be displayed throughout the southeast U.S. and featured in print publications as both photographer and author. Private collectors and corporations proudly display Sterling’s fine art in homes and offices nationwide

It took a global pandemic and national economic collapse to make me realize I hadn’t a week off from business since February 2017. Well, the good news is I finally got one. On the other…

Peter Batchelor, Professor Emeritus, Dies at 85 - NC State College of Design

Like every academic year, North Carolina State University's design school has a first-day convocation of the entire college. It was September 2003 and it was my intent to skip the yearly dog and pony show, however walking past the open auditorium door, I noted an older lanky gentleman waiting for it to commence. I quietly cackled to myself, strode up to him and said "Hey Peter."

Peter Batchelor nodded in acknowledgement, began to return his head towards the stage, then in one snap motion whipped back towards me, eyes widened in recognition, shoulders jumping backwards, uttering with a bewildered British accent, "Good God, you're still here!"

I began earning my Masters in Architecture at NCSU - a 2 year program - in Fall 1999. It was my intent to finish the program in 3 years as I worked practicing architecture while in school. My architectural focus was on urban design and city fabric, so Peter's courses were a natural fit and that first semester in Raleigh I had him twice, for a classroom course and design studio. Following life didn't go as planned, my health took some devastating blows, forcing me to drop out of the program twice. Fast forward four years and Peter is querying with astonishment why I hadn't graduated yet.

By 2003 I had lost my joy for architecture and was one foot out the door, intent on applying to business school and leaving North Carolina as soon as possible. However before I left, the combination of Peter's reaction and my warped sense of humor guaranteed only one option: take his design studio, 4 years later, 2 years after I would've ideally graduated. Why not? It was a fitting end.

What I appreciated immensely about Peter is how intensely and individually invested he was in what his students were doing. He genuinely cared. That fall, we had a semester-long studio assignment that included urban study and design in a real-life neighborhood near Baltimore; much of that included photography and presentation. Peter really liked some of the pictures and a few became front-and-center during our formal presentations. I hadn't yet much experience with a camera.

You see, Peter Batchelor is multi-talented - not only was he FAIA and FAICP as an urbanist, but an accomplished artist and - you guessed it - photographer. In fact, he spent a few summers shooting architectural photography for hire. During our end-of-semester meeting, Peter mentioned that my biggest contributions was in capturing and presenting the essence or urban areas with a camera, and strongly encouraged me to continue exploring, no matter where my career went.

Well - you all know where my career went. Between Texas A&M and NCSU, Peter Batchelor is the only professor I kept in touch with after graduation. Every couple of years we'd meet for a beer, talk photography, and share some of the work we were doing.

Life's kind of a funny thing, you go into an endeavor intending for the results to go one way, only to have the roads lead you elsewhere. That final design studio was a key fork in that road pointing to where I am now. Peter was a great listener - always kind, caring and for me personally, in the right place at the right time.

To Peter - cheers.

The College of Design is saddened to learn of the death of Professor Emeritus Peter Batchelor. Peter passed away on April 15, 2020.

After ten years based solely in Raleigh, North Carolina, I'm pleased to announce expansion into Texas. Over a decade in business, I've been fortunate to work across 20 states, most commonly throughout North Carolina and the southeastern United States for a diverse, national client base.

This has led to occasional assignments and increasing opportunity in Texas, a state I formerly lived for six years and still have a deeply rooted personal and professional network. Growing business for a decade has afforded this possibility and becomes formal in 2020.

I will headquarter in San Marcos, with immediate service to Austin and San Antonio, available for hire throughout Texas including the metros of Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston.

My existing work based out of Raleigh for my current clients, including metros in TN, VA, NC, SC and beyond will remain as I pursue this endeavor. The long-term plan is to organically grow a similar radius of business in central Texas that I have in the southeast.

Specifically, thank you to my amazing friends and colleagues in Texas for their awesome, encouraging support as I've floated this idea the past couple years. I'm excited about the new avenues that may open over the new decade. Wish me luck!

On Tuesday, August 13 I'm presenting to the Wake Forest Camera Club about - again, you guessed it - environmental and design photography, framing concepts contained within examples of work as both professional photographer and fine artist. WFCC gathers in a meeting room at the Forks Cafeteria, 339 Brooks St Wake Forest, NC at 6:45 PM. It's sure to overlap the presentation made in June but I'll try to mix it up a bit. :)
