It’s a wrap!
Our impromptu RV adventure ended on Tuesday afternoon, after two final days in Gettysburg. Amazingly enough, even though I grew up in Pennsylvania and lived there for 32 years, plus I am a big history and Civil War buff, I had never been to Gettysburg!
On the way from Kentucky to Gettysburg we stayed in West Virginia. There we were visited by two beautiful young deer, plus we had a bizarre dinner at a diner where 2 men were singing country songs in an adjacent big room complete with a disco ball, flashing lights, whiskey barrel chairs, and elderly ladies dancing together. Quite an interesting cultural experience.
In downtown Gettysburg we had dinner at a terrific Irish pub called Goodowen. If you're ever there, check it out. The next day, we first visited the Gettysburg Cyclorama - an incredibly detailed 42’ high by 377’ wide painting that encircles you. Areas of the Cyclorama light up as someone narrates the story about Picketts Charge, the climactic ending to the 3-day battle. We then met our tour guide, who drove us through the battlefield in our vehicle. He was an encyclopedia of Gettysburg knowledge and regurgitated everything he knew in a 2-hour period. As someone who lived in Maine for nearly 30 years, and walked past Joshua Chamberlain‘s home and statue regularly when I volunteered at Maine State Music Theatre, it was really awesome to stand on Little Round Top and imagine what it was like for the 20th Maine on July 2, 1863. Our tour guide was properly impressed by the bravery of those soldiers. We finished at the Museum, which was a treasure trove of Civil War information.
Now we wait for our flight back to Florida. Thankfully we'll miss Hurricane Helene. Praying for our friends at home so that she loses her punch before landfall.
